Poll: what are the music genres that would describe the majority of music to which you listen?

Yes, I agree. I did qualify that statement with “perhaps”. I do find my preference in music is a comforting constant in a world that increasingly feels rather alien. :alien:

Can’t stretch to the Naim Statement. Since acquiring my Nait 50 though, the musicians talent’s can finally be appreciated and enjoyed.

My other is Americana/Country/Bluegrass, Electronic and TripHop - and my Folk is mainly British Folk (English and Scottish)

Well I agree- ‘World’ can often mean non US, or US influence mainstream commercial music which is a somewhat naive view… and therefore really means nothing in a general sense -as its meaning is relative and subjective.

Whilst I do dip into my back catalogue of music not much of my current listening was recorded more than 15 to 20 years ago and all of my pre-2000 released music listening would account for less than 20% of my listening. Which is why I only ticked “other” for my listening. Even though it would include alt-rock, indie, Americana etc,

There are lots of genres missing from this list that don’t fit into the options offered to my mind, I do recognise though that the list could become very extensive to include them. But it does feel like a very boomer-orientated list of music to me. BTW I am a boomer, albeit one who doesn’t fit the stereotype of listening to the music of my youth and twenties.

So what genres would you say you listen to at least 20% of your listening time, so I can include in a possible poll of “other”?

For reference, things people listen to only a small proportion of the time are not of relevance to this poll because the intent is purely to try and get the main flavour of forum members’ listening tastes.

Yes.

I listen to Uzbek Folk music. Is that World or Folk?

Let me begin by asking how one can have six choices each representing 20%? :grinning:

Neither pop nor rock reach my 20% point, but I have never really distinguished between the two and together they hit the mark (barely). The genre I created on my music server is rock/pop.

I mostly listen to Middle of the Road, :grinning:

I would class any folk as folk for the purposes of this poll (hence the wording “or local equivalent”.

As for “middle of the road”, middle of the road pop =pop etc… But if that is a genre all on its own then put under “other” and say so.

And before anyone asks, crossover genres like, say, jazz-rock, clearly there is a spectrum, but just choose which you feel is the dominant style or put both jazz and rock.

I suspect the reverse is the case. Currently ‘rock’ is heading the poll. Maybe that suggests that those liking rock music gravitate towards Naim Audio because they already feel it’s the best at conveying their preferred musical style.

Because I am not expecting accurate data and this way reduces the need to try and decide which to include.

As for pop, personally most I don’t regard as rock, but indeed I nearly excluded pop because over time it is a collection of styles. If I were to try to define pop I’d say it is chart music of the day excluding the occasional presence of clearly distinguishable other styles that make it occasionally. But I suppose there are a multitude of views on this!

I love Americana it’s not listed as well.

Heard For The Longest Time on the radio earlier and thought how wonderful it sounded, not having heard it for a while. Apparently its doo-wop which wicki tells me is a sub genre of rhythm and blues. I would have expected R and B to be on the list as the precursor of Pop?

Other - metal (of which there are many sub genre).
Other - DnB,Jungle and various other dance type stuff

And the whole point of our current system is that it can cope with any genre we throw at it (both SWMBO and myself listen to a very wide range of music).

But does uf make upa fifth of more of your listening time?

BTW, what is Americana? I sort of assume it is everything american that is not one of the main categories oc the poll, e.g. Including C&W ?

Because I am not expecting accurate data and this way reduces the need to try and decide which to include.

(Hence, my smile.)
