Post - firmware issues with Star, advice please

I did a firmware update on my Star a couple of nights ago, during a session on headphones. So, I did the update, and all seemed well, all inputs worked on phones, everything sounded great, again through headphones, perhaps better, but there was no sound through my speakers (SCM11s) Blast, what’s wrong? But as it was late I left it till the following morning. (I’m now on 3.12.0.5738, if it helps).

Still the same, so did a full reset, after which things all seemed back to normal, but speaker output seemed lower than before, I was having to wind the volume up to 50, rather than 35-40.

Should I have unplugged my pho as before updating, please? Can I expect things to improve later?

I’m just relieved that it’s all working, and if anyone can suggest any settings, etc. to check, thanks.

Have you checked what the max volume setting is in the app

I have just done that, thanks, Proterra, and it is now back to 100, from the 85 it had moved itself to.

So all good now, many thanks, should have checked before but I wasn’t expecting that sort of change; perhaps a safety thing to prevent damage on restarting? Something to remember for future reference. :sunny:

Exactly that. At times the volume can suddenly shoot up to 100 and possibly damage your speakers. It’s happened twice to me over the years and I almost jumped out of my skin!

Indeed, the new firmware 3.12 has caused this issue for some members using the app - it seems this happens if you tap the volume button on the app a few times too quickly - an updated app has been issued to the relevant app stores but may not be live yet - see the 3.12 firmware thread in “Streaming Audio” section.

It’s therefore advisable to set the max volume lower than 100, Naim seem to set it automatically at 85. I have had no problems when using the remote or turning the volume wheel on my Atom but did have in Roon when clicking the + button too quickly.

Has anyone set the max volume lower?

Peter

thanks LSLFAN, I did set the volume to 85 when I had my previous Doublets, can’t remember why, but since I got my SCM. 11s I thought they sounded quieter than expected, but then I checked the Settings which was at 85, so increased it to 100 which sounded more what I expected, though I rarely go above 50, which gives a comfortable listening level. I was apprehensive initially as the 11s suggest amp minimum of 80W, and the Star is 70, but seems to be coping well.

In my ignorance, I assumed that it would act as a limiter, and the volume would be prevented from going above that level, but it seems to attenuate it up to 85, reducing the volume from 0 - 85.

I have wondered what changes the update would bring, will investigate further.

Thanks again,

Geoff.

I am very happy with both the firmware and the app updates, so much more sonic information, and graphic info with the app on my Android phone.

Thanks to everyone involved.
