Following the TV selections. First night now, Ludwig van’s 5th on Sunday.
Not televised, but tomorrow is apparently “Prog Rock” night. If you absolutely must I suppose. Oh well. Best get it out of the way early on.

I think the prog rock prom is being recorded for later broadcast on BBC4, according to the BBC online listing anyway (but not the main listing in the printed Proms Guide).
‘Prog Rock’ as a title does not fill me with anticipation, must admit. Luckily, I’m working til 9pm…
If I want prog, I’d stick with Varese et al I think.
Really great Prom last night on TV. Of course, they had to ruin it at the end with the beyond-dumbing-down arrangement of the worst song in rock.

Just watched the “Prog Rock” prom. To me It was very disappointing. Only thought the Floyd great gig was worthwhile. Just listened to 3 of the others on vinyl. The proms really, really missed out.

The ‘Prog on the Beeb’ compilation afterwards was good though. Some good clips on that one and some amusing stuff too (e.g. the disco dancing to Atomic Rooster on TOTP).

Just seen it on the iPlayer. First time I’ve seen the TV broadcast but listened live on R3. I have been trying to think of what they could possibly have done. More guests who were there at the time? We had Carl Palmer but what about Rick Wakeman doing excerpts from ‘Six Wives’ like a modern day Yessongs, or ‘White Rock’. Could have done some of the visual stuff Peter Gabriel style or a bit more dry ice! Genesis had ‘Entangled’ which was pretty good. I also enjoyed ‘And You and I’ and of course the DSOTM track. Tried to compare the Genesis stuff with the Steve Hackett modern day versions which are authentic and modernised appropriately and they don’t do the Gabriel visuals I don’t think. It would have been nice to see more ‘epic’ tracks like ‘Supper’s Ready’ or ‘Close to the Edge’ but difficult to fit everything in and probably a bit much if one is not into prog. I felt Renaissance were not best represented by ‘Northern Lights’. Could have done with an epic from their heyday like ‘Can You Hear Me?/The Sisters’ or ‘Can You Understand?’ or ‘Running Hard’. Difficult to replicate the soaring voice of Annie Haslam!

Thought the highlight was Peter Hamill performing “Refugees” by VDGG. Originally from 1970 but still somewhat relevant today.
Yes indeed I watched it. I am not as familiar with the original output of VDGG as I should be, not having got into them back in the day. Must put that right.
Anyway, back to the music.
I was only vaguely familiar with Sheku Kanneh-Mason from seeing him playing at Meghan and H’s wedding.
I watched him playing Elgar’s Cello Concerto from the Proms archive. Wowee. That’s a chap who plays with real passion!
Also, that’s the first time I’ve seen a conductor on the podium dancing to the music.
