QNAP NAS - Red Lights Fix

Just returned from holiday to find my main NAS a QNAP TS 251+ flashing red lights and looking a little poorly.

I thought that’s it after 10 years service the discs have failed. A long process ahead working with the back-ups and setting up a new 12TB NAS.

Then a chance google and I found this amazing video - £10 spent on jump clips and a 100ohm resister and 10 minutes later - unreal my NAS is up and running doing it’s stuff. Amazing Fix.

This sounds like the known bug in the Intel Atom C2000 series CPUs. My Synology DS415+ suffered from the same issue and in this case the solution was to solder the 100 ohm resister between holes 1 and 6 of the block which did not have pins so the jumpers were not possible. Again the instructions on Youtube videos were quite straight forward. My DS415+ has been running faultlessly for about 3 years since the fix so hopefully you will have more years of trouble free service from your Qnap.

I have a DS1813+ and a DS1817+ both of which I believe are at risk. I leave them on 24/7. All good so far.

I have a QNAP DAS attached to the PC and starts the QNAP External RAID Manager on boot up.

Is there not a similar bit of QNAP software for your NAS, this can hilight a problem before disaster strikes.

Not sure I don’t use raid. This isn’t a problem with the discs but as mentioned above a failure on the motherboard.

Monitors the Enclosure health too.

Yep, the Intel C2000 CPU LPC Clock degradation issue, as mentioned by @LutherP.

The clock will continue to degrade, so it’s unknown how long the pull-up resistor will remain effective.

Likewise, I did the 100 ohm resistor patch to my TS-251. However, after recovering my data, I decided to move on to a new NAS, so I wouldn’t have to worry about a reoccurence.

Make a backup ASAP and replace it, my old Synology had the same problem.

It’s only a short term fix.

Yes thanks and to all the others who have prompted similar advice.

I have just ordered a new QNAP in the Black Friday sales and hopefully as QNAP compatibility guide says I can take the existing discs out and swap them over.

I’d still take a full backup of all important files first ….

I had to do that exact fix on my friends QNAP nas about 12 months ago.
