I am enjoying Marcus Aurelius’ ‘Meditations’ just now.
A favourite quote ‘The noblest retribution is not to become like your enemy’.
I’d also pick ‘It is not death a man should fear, but he should fear not beginning to live’
I recommend his little book to all. Not bad from AD160’s. His practical, grounded and essentially forward looking philosophy (from the Stoics) really resonates with me. First look at yourself is a basic principle throughout.
According to a recent episode in the “Philosophical Radio” over here in Germany, a better translation from old Greek might be: “I know that I don’t know”.
