What I want is a DAC capable of outstanding sonic performance at a sane price, regardless of the design or technology in use, and that’s exactly what I got with this little overachiever.
Whether it be a DAC or record deck… you know you have a good one when the actual source medium has become transparent and the feeling the source is trying too hard and exaggerating vanishes… ie you are not listening to a record or digital with obvious artefacts like sibilance or exaggerated detail, enhanced bass or warmth, overly filtered high end, lack of or exaggerated stereo feel etc… I find very few sources get you there, but when they do it’s a revelation… and you wish you got there sooner… but typically this comes at some cost.. so it does take time.
Glad you found yours.
The number of people saying XYZ sounds digital or this vinyl warm clearly have not found theirs… and I do find these colourations can really detract from the enjoyment of recordings where on well mastered productions not inconsiderate effort is expended in tuning these aspects in the recording to give a tailored feel to the sound.
My revelation is still the Weiss DAC204, after extended comparisons and evaluation it became clear that as good as the BorderPatrol DAC is it will not find permanent residence in my primary system, but it does add a lot of life to my secondary system.
