Radford Revival Solid State & Tube Amp

What does anyone think of this design, e.g. to go with Open Baffle speakers?

I heard this amp being used to very good effect last year at the Northwest audio show, along with a Garrard turntable and speakers with full range drivers - But in such a novel system, it’s hard to know what role the amp played in making the system sound so good.

Worth correcting spelling in thread title, imo.

C.

Done, thanks.

I had the privilege of listening to one belonging to a fellow audiophile of recent acquaintance. I’d visited to get a feel for EL84s and very much enjoyed them in a Leak Stereo 20 but found the Radford and it’s EL34s much more to my taste. Imagine a much smoother Naim sound but with the some of what tubes can do. I would insgine pairing it with an open baffle would certainly be worth a go.

I was offered the amp but it would never pass the WAF and I don’t find it at all acceptable in a modern living room. The sound however was excellent.

The above amplifier is using the KT88 family, not EL34s. Seems to be a modern monoblock take on the Radford TT100.

The name is conjuring up a memories of names like ADC, Hadcock, Pickering, Quad, Sugden, STD turntables and Lentek in my late seventies hi-fi mags.

Ah, apologies, slightly different to what I heard then, albeit not much in terms of design. Same principle applies I think. Begging to be tried with open baffle. I heard on some lovely old eiectrostatics.

My wife had the same view of my EAR-Yoshino 534, which she called, ‘The Alien’.

Fortunately, my HiFi lives out of eye-sight.

Yes, it can automatically sense and adjust for KT88, KT90, KT120 and KT150 VACUUM TUBES.

Thanks, Mike.

That’s very interesting feedback.

It sounds like you listened to one of the other two amps made by Radford revival, the STA15 or the 25.

I’m thinking it was the 25.

When you say that you were offered the amp, does that mean your friend wanted to sell it to you?

Is he unhappy with it or upgrading or changing to something else?

It’s one of many amps he has. Seems happy to keep experimenting and moving any of them on.
