Radio Paradise FLAC........and ALAC

I am just listening to the RP Main Mix FLAC stream via Roon (on my MacBook Air i5 as the Roon Core) upscaled into my ND5XS2 (with Chord Hugo TT2 DAC) and my new MusoQb2 as a grouped zone in Roon.

The ND5XS2 digital output is supporting 192kHz output as per the light on the TT2.

The result is a genuine step up from the already good RP AAC 320kbps stream(s) and , as with all the RP channels, an absolute pleasure to listen to.

Could someone who got the RP FLAC stream working through MinimServer, let me know the steps to do this please. I am running minimServer on a Qnap and downloaded MinimWatch on my MacBook, and installed the additional MinimStreamer plugin. But am a bit stuck about how and where am I suppose to add the url link or playlist or m3u file, whatever it is that is the actual stream. The MinimServer use guide has a lot of information but nothing about where to add this stream information to show up in the Naim app. Can anyone help?

I’ve done it with Minimserver on a Synology NAS, but assume QNAP is similar. Create your m3u playlists as explained earlier in this thread and then copy the files into your music library from the NAS desktop.

In case it still isn’t clear, DomTom, after you have created the Radio Stations.m3u file you need to place it in your music library on the QNAP. It can be anywhere in the library but I keep mine in a Playlists folder.

For example, let’s assume your music library is in /share/Music.

  • Create a new Playlists folder /share/Music/Playlists from Windows/MacOS or using the QNAP File Station.
  • Copy your Radio Stations.m3u file into that folder.
  • Trigger a rescan using MinimWatch and MinimServer will detect and parse the playlist file.

When the rescan is completed you will see a new playlists folder at the MinimServer top level in the Naim app that says “1 playlist”. Tap on that folder and you will see an entry for Radio Stations (the name here is the name you gave the .m3u file). Tap again and you will see the list of stations defined in the playlist file.

Thank you both. I must have missed the bit about creating the playlists, hence why I was confused about the process. Will try it tonight.

One last question. I have all my local files stored on my NAS as WAV format, either 16 or 24bit as well as some DSD albums. Will these be effected if I change the stream setting to flac:wav ?

No, your wav files would not be affected by the flac:wav transcode spec but see this earlier post for the recommended way to set this up. Doing it this way ensures that even if you had local FLAC files these would not be affected by the transcode setting used for radio streams.

Note that in your case you can just use *:L16 as your transcode spec as you don’t have FLAC files that you want to transcode to WAV.

Thank you for your help Adrian!

It would be great if someone could put together a step by step guide for Synology Minimserver and lossless RP streams for the legacy streamers.
Thanks!!

Csi, have you read through the thread?

Without the ability to create and maintain “sticky” posts as users, posting the kind of definitive guide you are asking for is difficult as knowledge and experience evolves and it ends up distributed across a thread.

I wouldn’t claim to have the definitive answer to this as each person’s needs and environment are different, but the post I linked to earlier in this thread just a few posts earlier represents what I consider to be the optimum setup for my needs which are precisely the same as yours. Give that guide a try. You’ll be happy with the results.

For completeness, here’s my current radio stations m3u file which now includes the alternative RP streams.

Adrian,
Thank you for the sample m3u file and the syntax for defining the station name in addition to the station URL. I have been using a separate m3u file for each radio station in a Playlist folder (‘Internet Radio’) on my Melco but this will make it easier to manage.

Incidentally the Melco N1ZH/2 has some buffering issues with these very FLAC radio stations which my ND5 XS2 in the same system plays without interruption. I added the stations to the ND5 via vtuner which is a real legacy experience :smiling_imp:

Yes, T-elmi, much easier to manage with a single playlist rather than one for each station.

However, as you have a second generation streamer there’s no real benefit in using MinimStreamer since you can add the FLAC streams using vTuner and stream them directly from iRadio as you described. The fact that the Melco seems to struggle with the streams makes the MinimStreamer option even less attractive. And by using iRadio you can add the FLAC stations as favourites presets which you cannot do with the playlist approach.

Agreed on the vTuner UI, it is absolutely shocking.

works fine on my Mu-So Qb v1 (do not test on my Qute for the moment)

thanks all for your help

These are the same stations I have in my playlist, thanks again for helping us get this sorted.

If anyone has any additional FLAC stations to submit I’d love to have some additional variety in station choices.

If anyone’s interested, I’ve added a Planet Rock stream, which shows as playing in CD resolution :grinning:

I’ll try and get this to work on my Nas

I got the FLAC stations working on my Superuniti, Muso and Synology NAS.

First a big thank you to Adrian and Elmarko for their advice and input.

I thought I would write a summary guide that will help others.

Section 1 - Install MinimWatch, MinimServer, MinimStreamer
MinimWatch is installed on your laptop. MinimServer is installed on your NAS.
Once Minimwatch is working, green icon. (Java is needed), then goto Properties, Packages and Install MinimStreamer.

Section 2 - M3u file
This is very straightforward, but initially confused me the most. Use a text editor (Notepad++),copy and paste in the below text.
#EXTM3U

#EXTINF:-1,[RP;flac] Radio Paradise FLAC
http://stream.radioparadise.com/flac

#EXTINF:-1,[RPMellow;flac] Radio Paradise Mellow Mix FLAC
http://stream.radioparadise.com/mellow-flac

#EXTINF:-1,[JBRadio2;flac] JB Radio2
http://199.189.87.9:10999/flac

and then save as type (.txt) and with a filename e.g. (radio.m3u)

Install radio.m3u file in the same place as where you are storing your music.
A playlist icon appears on the naim app and you if you click there, your flac radio stations appear.

So both sections have to work properly but all the information needed is definitely contained within this huge thread so thanks to all the contributors.

Last note I am transcoding flac:wav and all work perfectly including all my hires and DSD albums.

Merry Xmas everyone!!!

Csi, Merry Xmas to you too.

The information in your guide works and it’s what I was originally using but as I pointed out earlier it isn’t what I would now regard as the optimum setup. Having MinimStreamer transcode everything to WAV is fine for locally-stored FLAC files but can potentially cause problems for radio streams as WAV is meant to provide a wrapper around a distinct file of finite length. For radio streams we should be using linear PCM (without the WAV wrapper).

I showed out how I set this up just a few posts earlier. Take a look back at post 161, where you will see you can use a simpler form for the m3u file together with a modified transcode format that allows MinimStreamer to transcode FLAC radio streams to PCM and local FLAC files to WAV.

Thanks Adrian_P!!

I changed the m3u file to the simpler setup and changed the transcode to flac:wav, *:L16. All working fine with my SU and Muso.

I was worried that my DSD albums would not work but they are playing as before.
I was reading all the posts with envy as you managed to get the FLAC streams working…
Great stuff!!

Bonjour Adrian,

I have read the tread that you made on May 29 2019 regarding Radio Paradise FLAC on minimServer. I don’t why it didn’t work. I’m not a tech savvy but I can sort it out. I have a SuperUniti and as you know I tried to install RP flac with vTuner and it failed. So I read your tread and follow instructions.

I installed MinimServer and MinimWatch after I got a couple of errors with “mscript” I installed MinimStreamer as well. I had to install java 8 as well. I can see in the PC root “MinimServer [AG]” is running and I can see it on my SuperUniti as well and it works.

So I used the coding that you gave and wrote it as below (no space between lines)

#EXTM3U

#EXTINF:-1,[RP;flac] Radio Paradise FLAC

http://stream.radioparadise.com/flac

And It didn’t work I got this below as message

+*http://stream. radioparadise.com/flac

unkown command: http://stream.radioparadise.com/flac

+:status=1

As I’m not a tech savvy did I miss something or are there something that I should have done before or after to create the “Radio Stations.m3u” and I don’t know where I should see that file either.

Thanks in advance for your help

Allen

Where are you getting these messages from? Sounds like you are trying to execute the .m3u as a batch file which is not how this works.

Take a look at my post from 29th July 2019 linked to just a few posts up. You’ll see there what the recommended format for the .m3u file is (you are using an outdated version).

What you need to do is take a copy of the .m3u file in the right format and copy it to your music library on your NAS (or wherever you are running MinimServer). Anywhere will do – I have mine in a “Playlists” folder. Then, when you do a rescan of your library, MinimServer will scan your .m3u file and make the stations browseable in the Naim app.
