Hi, I have a mu-so and mu-so qb in separate addresses both on fibre optic broadband connected directly to router and firmware is up to date. There is a very long delay, minutes in the stream. This is very annoying. I have seen discussions on here from users who are concerned because they want to use multi room, which I do not. Is there anyway to fix it? Thanks.
You say the musos are in different addresses - I assume to mean different properties rather than different IP addresses in the one property - so I don’t get why it matters if the two are not in sync. Is that what you mean by ‘very long delay’?
Internet radio is not like FM, and it will not be in sync, which is why multiroom comes in useful.
How would you even know if they are in different properties? Maybe different rooms?
Thanks for the replies guys. The point is that I have no interest in them being in sync. That is not relevant. I want the stream to be at least somewhat close to real time. At the moment it is constantly about 5 minutes behind. I fully understand it will never be the same as FM. I am thinking of getting rid of my smart speakers for radio and buying more FM radios but giving this forum a try first.
I think it is just the nature of Internet radio. There is so much more for it to get through before it gets to your home, let alone to the loudspeaker. You will never get the “pips” on time using internet radio! Even DAB is delayed compared to FM, due to the processing involved.
From a technical point of view, online streaming - of which Internet radio is effectively just a variant - as I understand it is not a simple continuous sequence of the music digits all in order, but it is sent in packets, which upon receipt are checked for accuracy, and if necessary re-sent, before being assembled Into that continuous sequence of music digits that even then are held in a buffer waiting for sufficient to be ready in order to avoid gaps in play, before finally going into the DAC to convert to analogue audio. Clearly that will take an awful lot more time than a radio wave getting to you!
Yes thanks. I get that. I don’t ever expect to get the pips on time but the delay I am experiencing particularly on the Naim system seems very excessive. A lot of radio shows are interactive now with WhatsApp messaging. The problem with Naim is that the item may be over before they get my texts.
There are many variables that will affect the degree of latency you get when streaming from the web. Your DAC, streamer and ISP for example, and your geographical location relative to the server. However, I would expect most of these to cause a delay of seconds rather than minutes.
What stations do you find causing this issue, and what format is used?
As for what sort of delay might be normal, maybe someone with mire technical experience in data comms than I might be able to advise, such as possibly @Simon-in-Suffolk ?
Naim isn’t delaying the internet radio feed. All Naim does is point the streamer at the stream from the station and turn the stream into an audio feed. The Naim-originated delay is going to be some milliseconds rather than minutes!
I fairly often listen to cricket commentary on Internet Radio while watching on satellite TV. In the past my experience was the airborne radio signals, would be 2-3 seconds ahead of the TV broadcast, now I tend to pause the TV for about 4-5s to sync the streams. So I’d say that the delay is usually below 10s, this is in the U.K using either Ethernet to my main streamers or wifi to the Muso Qbs.
