Hi
I’m looking at a radio solution for my NDS (prefer firmware 4.8 to 4.9) and am trying JPLAY. Anyone any recent experience? My server is a Melco running minim server.
I had a playlist in the Naim app. With Naim app shutdown (iOS) I selected one of those tracks via JPLAY and after a few Faldo starts it eventually played on the NDS.
However, after shutting down JPLAY and going back to the Naim app that playlist shows that track as not available.
I thought JPLAY may have locked the file somehow but no, I can play the track from the Naim app by going direct to the album list and also through a PC.
So the file seems ok but still shows on the Naim app playlist as not available.
Any ideas?
I also find that JPLAY also seems to play again the previously selected file until stopped a couple of times and will eventually play the correct file
I tried with the trial of the JPLAY app.
I found no SQ advantage for local files played over UPnP vs Asset & Naim App & Roon with SonoreUPnP bridge (also a UPnP stream)
I found no SQ advantage over Roon with SonoreUPnP bridge for Tidal MAX & Qobuz playback
i.e. if you can feed the NDS with a ‘local’ UPnP stream you are getting the best from the NDS network player.
Being a Roon Lifetime licensee there was no advantage and not justifying an additional spend.
So it depends can you get a ‘local’ UPnP stream into the NDS for all your content sources?
Unfortunately not for radio which is all I’m looking to add. I’m happy with my Melco for all my local material and the NDS itself for tidal.
I’ve looked at roon but to be honest it’s far too expensive for just adding radio especially as I don’t have an ‘always on’ computer to act as a host. It’s just a radio feed I’m looking for to supplement.
However, I’m still concerned with JPLAY seemingly doing something to my playlist
If you are just looking to add Internet Radio playback to FW4.8 now vTuner has been deprecated and replaced by iRadio in FW4.9, then perhaps a TuneIn service on a UPnP server is an option.
What UPnP server does Melco use?
I know that Asset has a TuneIn integration, just I never included it in my configuration, at the time, as I have vTuner. And now have ‘Live Radio’ in Roon (which I play in a multiroom configuration across different hardware, including the NDS)
This maybe a cheaper & easier option that adding further hardware, especially as formats used for Internet Radio are at best lossless 16/44.1, with only one or two being 24-bit.
Simon.pepper. The Melco uses minim server but I’m not really sure what can done with it.
I’ll maybe try the Melco forums and see if anyone has looked at radio.
Lack of response here with JPLAY probably means it doesn’t play well with the NDS.
I am running radio via Minimserver on my Melco. It even allows me to record from radio. Just enable Minimstreamer in you Minim-setup (it is included in the Minim v2 license).
Then look in the docs for “Playing network streams with MinimStreamer” - they have Linn Radio as an example. To setup recording check the section “Making recordings”.
I am using JPLAY with a Mano Ultra streamer and it sounds really great compared to other controllers. But to get the “magic” I think you need to run a standard UPnP-setup. Naim uses some kind of special buffering in their streamer-renderer and things like the SonoreUPnP Bridge probably also mess this up for JPLAY. JPLAY reduce the network traffic (if you set it up to do so) and I think it does its thing best with a normal server/streamer-renderer (that is how I read their docs).
@jan do you use minimsreamer also on the Melco? If so which menu item?
I can now see the radio file on the NDS itself (under minimsever-playlist) but not in the app. However, I’ve double checked the urls in the file and the NDS just says can’t play
