Rega RP3 / RP3 RS owners - cart and phono stage pairings

For those with new-ish RP3s and RSs, what cartridge and phono stage options are you using? I’m unboxing an RP3 with an ND5 shortly and will most likely connect it to a Rega PS at first. Fono MM MK5.

Wondering what other combos are out there and the sound signatures between them.

Rega to Rega is pretty straightforward, but guessing theres a number of forum users with a Stageline or other built in PS. Interested to hear some opinions from those that have 'em. (Regas and opinions )

Hi,Maury, my RP3 isn’t new-ish, but I’m using a Nagaoka MP110 body {still have stylus, in case) with a JNP200 stylus, which work well together, but presumably not quite as good as a full MP200, and into an Arkless -modified CA 640P phono.
Very happy with the results, good luck with your search.

I recently sold a P3 for a P6, I think that’s what you should do, the gap is very important and keep the Fono mk5 which is very good… then I replaced the ND5 with the ND7 and now I don’t touch anything!

Yeah, I’m not doing that. I just bought the P3.

I will keep your set then, what’s the problem?

Hi Maury, After lengthy conversations with my local shops, I purchased a new RP3 RS a short while ago with the ND5 and I’m very satisfied.
I have both Audiolab and Rega io kit, in line with all the reviews I’d read, it sounds really pleasing through both options. No immediate plans for change. Regards, Ian

Is the PS in the io similar to the Fono?

no problem, just wanted to see what combination of cartridges and phono stages people were using on their P3s.

you used the ND5 with the Fono? if so, how was it?

Sorry, i misunderstood your question, my P3rs goes through a Fono MM mk5, and yes sounds just fine with the ND5

I have a super modern 1986 rega Planar 3

Updated with motor and Neo power supply.

Had an Exact on it. Very meaty sound. Now have ND5 - a bit more detail, but still plenty of thump for rock.

Goes straight into Nait 50.

Previously had a Brio which was a bit of a bright mismatch with speakers. So added a project Tube phono to add warmth.

Summary for you: I think the ND5 is probably the best match for p3.

It was when I bought the P6 that I realized that the ND5 was not fully used with the P3… it is much better on the P6, and as I have already written, the ND7 is really excellent on the P6 and I imagine even better on the P8…

I haven’t compared the Fono with more expensive preamps but I already find it well balanced, no frustrations while listening to it which is essential for me… I think that when the whole channel is REGA there is a consistency that we don’t have without. (as with NAIM in the end!)

P3 with Gold note ds10 and hana eh works well. I also have tried the eh with a naim e board in the nac 62 which is just as effective. I haven’t heard the rega nd carts.

that makes sense - I would assume that Rega is tuning everything with their own phono stages so you’ll get the sound they want you to have.
