Replace standard powerlines

I want to change my standard powelines. I own a NSC222, 250NC and NPX300. I have 2 wall sockets, 2 Cord Epic powerlines, 1 Naim Powerline, and a Chord Powerhouse S6. What are your thoughts about connecting. Powerline from the wall socket to the NPX300 for example ??

Hi and welcome back,

Ideally installing a dedicated radial circuit is the best solution, but acknowledging that isn’t possible for everyone.

In your case i think some trials are required, and trust your own ears as to which configuration works best. We could all offer an opinion, but ultimately, as is so often the case it has to be your judgment.

Good luck,

Lindsay

If anything directly in the wall then it’s the NAP250. This component will benefit most from the power directly from the wall.

Also, I would upgrade your wall sockets to a Furutech Sws NCF. This brings a great uplift for relatively little money. Biggest upgrade for the buck / euro I ever made.

According to the well-known Cumbrian mains specialist, wiring each socket as ring main (ie two runs of cable per outlet) is recommended. Is this worthwhile do you think? I am planning an installation and am looking for the best advice.

Sorry not qualified to answer that one!

That well known “Cumbrian mains specialist” is not only a fully paid up member of the “Snake oil club” but actually THE founding member.

Ask your electrician is the best advice, not some salesman.

I agree absolutely about the snake-oil place. I bought something once and then received their magazine regularly. It was hilarious, as were the prices.

I will of course ask my sparky but I am keen to get feedback from the community as I suspect that most electrician won’t be au fait with installations to serve high-end hifi.

Simplest method is ask for a separate spur from the board like they do for central heating combi boilers now.
It’s not expensive just messy to install maybe. :+1:

That was the original plan. I’ve since found a diagram on here (see below) of someone’s installation and it took a feed from before the distribution board to the new sockets via a dedicated distribution board. I’ve no doubt that we’d then be well into diminishing returns but I can see the thinking behind it.

Most “sparkies” won’t know why you want this. The thing is though, you don’t actually need it. Just buy a balanced power supply like an Airlink ASF3000MP and plug it into your mains socket. It will kill any and all mains nasties strait away and give you a clear audio experience. By it’s very nature and the way it works, a balanced power supply negates the need for any other type of supply to your gear. No need for a sparks, no need to re-decorate, no need to worry the wife. Just never ever ever plug in an SMPS into it…………………………….it will add all it’s rubbish straight to your now clean mains.

That looks like an interesting option. I see on their website that the device contains a large toroidal transformer. I already get buzzing at certain times which I can just about live with as it isn’t all the time and the steady-state buzzing is acceptable. But I am wondering if the device you suggest would buzz if connected to a supply on which it is known that Naim toroidal transformers buzz.

The reason i suggested that particular supply was because it has 3 voltage taps. 230v, 240v and 250v. Once you can establish what your average actual mains voltage is, you simply set the supply to that voltage. Then you will get no hum, no buzzing, no nothing………………just silence.
