Thanks, I was wondering the other day when that was airing.

I cannot wait for this! If you have read the Silmarillion then it is a must watch! It is a tough book to read at times but extremely rewarding if you can persevere :+1:

Except Amazon don’t have rights to the Silmarillion and so the Rings of Power isn’t based on it (IIRC, it’s based on the Appendices at the end of the Lord of the Rings).

(IMO, the RoP is garbage.)

I haven’t watched any except that trailer but I wonder if some of the money spent on production (plus noses, ears, and hair) should have been spent on actors and script.

The problem for me with LOTR was always that I thought it was essentially a kids/young adult book. I liked reading it as a teenager but as a ‘grownup’ series of films it was on the edge of being a bit silly. Watching that trailer I find myself thinking the same.

I know Game of Thrones and the like are very popular.

Not for me on the basis of the trailer. I’ll get my coat.

YMMV

Exactly right! The first series was really disappointing. I have low expectations based on this. Fragments of a few sentences from LoR were spun out. Different episodes had different directors which made for an uneven pace and tone.

@What_Are_You_To_Me doesn’t actually say that The Rings of Power is based on the Silmarillion I think he is probably referring to the fifth and final part of book, “Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age” which does actually refer to much of the content in the series.

Though it isn’t actually known how much of this final part of The Silmarillion was actually written by Tolkien or how much was written or edited by his son Christopher and Guy Gavriel Kay after Tolkien died in 1973 there are references to it in letters written by him.

Of the Rings of Power and The Third Age takes the form of an historical essay written in the style of The Appendices and acts as a preamble to the events of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. This and much else is dealt with in the excellent Tolkien Gateway described as the largest LOR encyclopedia.

The Rings of Power is an entertainment series aimed at the general population not Tolkien disciples who study his works religiously. I don’t think it can be literally based on Tolkien’s works in a way that would please everyone for most of us I think it’s just like most TV an escape for an hour or so and for those of us who read the books as children/teenagers an escape back to those parts of our lives.

And just to remind anyone, it is based on the appendices of the Lord of the Rings books.

I really enjoyed Season 1 though could be critical of several aspects, mainly casting, but crikey it’s a fantasy world, so anything would be possible.

Even on a 10 year old 1080p projector the visuals were frequently sumptuous and just made the experience for me - the CGI was most of the time excellent and very realistic. A visual feast with hopefully more to come.

I’ve just re-read our 2022 discussion of series 1. https://community.naimaudio.com/t/the-rings-of-power-the-lord-of-the-rings/24846
Which reminded me of things I did enjoy. The spectacle for one and the episodes directed by Charlotte BrĂ€ndström. I’m hoping the script will be strengthened. But I always do my utmost to enjoy film and TV.

I don’t think I could bear to see another fantasy realm desecrated to be honest.

I struggle with RoP curiosity because of the atrocious way they bastardised another great work and destroyed WoT beyond recognition. I’m a huge LOTR and even bigger WoT fan and never imagined a scenario where I’d not eagerly watch either, or a conceptual spinnoff, on the screen. But the fetid turd that was WoT scared me off ever watching another Amazon Studios version of a fantasy realm ever again.

What’s WoT?

Wheel of Time

Ahh, I nearly mentioned that - I got hung up thinking of World of something or other. I was looking forward to that but it was dire.

Tricky this.

Huge Tolkien fan. Also WoT, Jack Ryan, Jack Reacher, Harry Bosch, Fallout, Dune, Star Wars, etc.

So I should be loving these TV adaptations

Never read Wheel of Time and only lasted 10 minutes of Episode 1 it was awful. For those of you who haven’t even given the series a chance based on reviews or other ‘fantasy’ series it’s worth giving the series a chance you never know you might enjoy it.

I did exactly that with GoT finally watched series one eight or so years after it first aired and then watched and really enjoyed every episode.

I did watch S1 of GoT years after it all ended. But didn’t like S1 enough to continue.

Which brings on the other problem with streaming series: will they be cancelled? These days I rarely start any series until I see it’s been a few years since the last one. Then I look pn IMDB to see if it finished gracefully or was cancelled. Most just have the plug pulled and I won’t start those.

So once RoP has ended, I might reevaluate.

unwatchable drivel, don’t get taken in by this gravy train nonsense
YMMV

Amazon have committed a billion dollar budget to 8 seasons of RoP but who knows what will happen, I believe season 3 is in production but if 2 bombs who knows.
