sad news - a great musician

Very sad news indeed. Much loved here. For those who don’t know his work which was very diverse and there is a lot of it, you might start with the Kaz compilations of a few years ago. His very recent recordings are tender and majestic and also essential
Been playing this one. Lesser known perhaps but a great band. Has a version of The Wedding, my favourite Abdullah melody.

Oh that is another passing of a musician who has given me hours of musical pleasure. Like many, I’ll play a few of his albums this evening not missing out his earlier Dollar Brand recordings.
Sad? Why? He had a great inning and made a significant imprint on the music scene.
Sad is if someone dies before their time.
I’ll play a few of his tonight to celebrate his life rather than bemoaning a departure.

I saw him play the Bath Festival about 20 years ago - if my memory is right it was a duet performance with Omar Sosa (or, more likely, they were part of a double bill). Good memories, RIP.
I’ll dig my old Fontana LP of this one out later on, with its Marte Rolling cover art.

I saw Abdullah Ibrahim live several times, starting back when I was a student in the 1980s, and most recently in Switzerland a few years ago. He already seemed frail back then, but at the piano he was wonderful—a virtuoso who moved the audience with his emotion. A jazz legend. RIP!
“Sotho Blue” is a great album, and the sound quality on Qobuz is excellent. It’s worth a listen!
