Very sad news but a good long life - was just playing some of his music last night. RIP.

His basis was in jazz but he exploited his expertise in every direction from then on. Narrowly avoided death in the early 70s with a brain aneuyrism, which I remember in news at the time.

A great man, who produced a lot of fine work.

I had a very memorable and beautiful day with my son and daughter in August 2016 at the BBC Prom celebration of his career. It was wonderful to see him there and feel the respect, when he appeared to conduct the finale, getting a standing ovation, of course.

I suspect many on here will have something in their collection, at least associated with Quincy Jones. Whether one enjoys his music or productions or not, his influence on modern music has been vast in many different areas.

Indeed he was a prolific producer and talent mentor. I think it’s nearly impossible to have nothing in a music collection that has his fingerprints on it.

Personally, I loved his music. From his 1962 Big Band Bossa Nova to late 80s The Dude. Jones had style and musical range.

Very glad I saw him at Montreux a few years ago. ‘Only’ compering, not performing, unfortunately, but it was still lovely to see him in his 80s, still loving music and still discovering new things.

If you only know his work as a producer or band leader to headline performers, you need to trawl through the albums released simply under his name: Body Heat, Smackwater Jack and You’ve Got It Bad, Girl, for example, are all wonderful.

I’m sure I remember reading a story from his very early days, when he was out drinking with the band until the small hours, got back to his digs and then had to start writing out all the arrangements for the recording session later that day. Come the hour, all the music was present, correct and ready to go. Legend.

Guess you know what I’ll be playing tonight.

He has so much music I don’t know where to start. First and foremost I have to send my condolences to his niece who still lives in the Seattle area.

The opening to a BBC article today:

“Music is sacred to me,” Quincy Jones once said. “Melody is God’s voice.”

Amen, brother. Rest well.

What a huge loss to the world of music. It’s a shame that many news outlets are proclaiming that ‘Thriller’ was his finest achievement which wasn’t even his best moment of production.

As someone born in 1969 after some of his best work had already been recorded I’m still amazed at some of the music that I know but didn’t know he had a hand in.

I felt so sad to read about ‘Q’s’ passing, and how strange, I was playing lots of cd’s at the weekend and rooted out, ‘The Dude’ which I haven’t played for years which really showed his production values. A superb album along with ‘Sounds and Stuff Like That’ & ‘Q’s Jook Joint’.

R.I.P.’Q’ … You will be missed…
