Rolex - which one?

:+1: Agree, used to have a few Rolexes but got shut and now focus on Omega mainly…don’t like their games. Also similar reason to why I stopped buying Porsche.

I think this is my favourite Rolex.

Why is it ludicrous?

Their product is popular, and some models are in extremely high demand, even now.

When I bought my used stainless Daytona in November 2013, there was already a long waiting list at ADs.

There are people who blame the dealers. That’s ignorant and laughable. Ok, some dealers also behave in a strange way, but I’m absolutely sure that if I worked in an AD I’d turn out ‘different’. Dealers have zero control over production.

There’s a well known second hand dealer in London that has a steel Daytona from my year of birth (1979), looks incredible. Maybe that’s the way to go instead?

“Price available on application”, so it’s probably extremely cheap too, right?

I kind of see why Rolex have this “build up a relationship with previous sales” approach as they don’t want to sell to flippers, especially with models like the Daytona. I don’t agree with it and it puts me off the brand.

The annoying thing is that some Rolex’s aren’t that expensive (Explorer 226570 is €9,050 RRP) and a real watch lover will spend this on a timepiece that they will probably keep forever. The problem is they will never likely get the chance to.

I have heard of people going on a list and then getting calls within weeks and being offered watches from AD’s where everyone in the queue before then has said “no”. You’d need to be very, very lucky in this instance and be willing to part with your £££ immediately.

More common is waiting for years and never getting the call.

Sounds more like the dealers preferentially selling to the flippers, as they will be the ones with the greatest buying history… (Begging the question what might be in it for them?)

Agreed. I’ve got a Tudor GMT and it does everything I want at a reasonable price plus I’m not scared to death to take it out the house.

If anyone’s that desperate for one then the used market is the way to go and your money’s “probably” as safe as it is in the bank.

Hi
I was the same I did lots of homework and ended up thinking if it was Rolex on the dial it was obvious I’d have been well stiffed.
I bought my Tudor BB41 M79540 after a good look around and just loved the dial.
Reading the Rolex and Tudor forum it became apparent that Tudor is a Rolex without all the Bollocks.
If I was interested in going top end for me would be JLC Reverso or something from Patek Philippe.
I’m perfectly happy as I am.

@Stu299 , there is a good chance you could get this model if you are interested?

I like it personally and it’s a little under the radar. Since its recent overhaul I think it’s a better timepiece. Great movement too. Probably not for everyone but its nice on the wrist. Try one from an AD if you can.

well to be told you have had to be a regular purchaser before you get on the wasting list?, i get suply and demand, and th efact that yo umay never make the list but to have to prove loyalty or wealth to the dealer by making previous purchases is madness. Would naim say i can buy a statement if I’ve never bought from them before?

Now that looks lovely.

Were I in the moneyed classes, I’d certainly be looking at that…

Put yourself in their position. You’re struggling to cover business costs, there’s a demand for your product, but there’s not enough supply to meet it.
You’re going to look after your loyal customers, full stop. I wouldn’t expect my hifi dealer to treat me the same as their richest, most loyal customer is treated, that’s for sure. Yes, I’d expect to be treated in a respectful way (and they really do!) but that’s all.

That’s outrageous - ten years to service a watch?!!! :face_with_spiral_eyes:

If ever I had to to replace my (now discontinued) black Milgauss GV, that would be a strong contender - it must be the most “fun” Rolex ever produced.

Ah, very good! Have you thought about a career as a stand-up comic?

I gave it a go, but had to give up as everyone kept laughing at me…

Peter

PS Glad you recognised my poor attempt at humour!

People laughed at me as a child when I said I wanted to be a stand up comedian - well no one’s laughing now!
