Yeah… found that one by accident as well… thought it was going to open up an option to add it to tags or open up another menu!
Everything seems to be running a lot faster this morning mind. So, I’ll see how it goes today!

There does seem to have been a rash of server-side glitches in particular though live radio is now working again. Overall, however, it is an improvement and - no doubt much to the amusement of the titterers who have already made themselves heard from the back of the class - I do detect a small improvement in sound quality.
Did you control for small volume differences? Not asking to be annoying but when someone claimed an SQ difference between Roon 1.7 and the Naim app, I did compare. Ended up convinced that Roon volume with 1.7 was a bit lower than Naim app volume (but not enough to measure reliably with a phone app), so when just switching between the two, the Naim app sounded better. But when I adjusted the volume a bit, it did not (to me, yada yada).
Obviously you’d need two core machines to compare 1.7 and 1.8 volume, so that will be difficult …
This morning at work I’ve been using the Mac app on a 27 inch screen and it looks and feels good.
I seriously wouldn’t like to say if it’s improved sound quality or not…It does sound really good but then I’ve always felt that anyway.
I like the menu that pops up from the three dots on each track when looking at the album.
I like the + for adding to library.
The Play Now dropdown menu is nice with the timer for how long the current queue is.
I do like the artwork layout and typography (dark mode). Feels more magazine like. Reminds me of ID Magazine.
I like the new Home Screen…
Overall, it’s very good albeit with a few niggles which I hope will be sorted out. i.e. TAGs. But, for the most part its very good.
Found another tweak they could do with. When Adding to a Tag, it’s no longer highlighted afterwards. In other words, after adding it to the Tag and you go back in, there is no indicator to say which ones it’s already in.
Running on a quad core i5 Roon Rock fanless NUC.
The new “home” shows me everything I’m not interested in.
That would be a good feature. Similar to the drag and drop of widgets in iOS.
Hah solved it! I’ve made a bookmark of the discovery page and now I never need to see “home” at all!
That’s a great tip - thanks.
I had no problem installing the update at around 1800 hrs GMT. I played around a little and was not impressed, especially with the discovery screen being hard to find on the Home Screen. Then this morning it has suddenly decided to reanalyse my music.
I like the data / information, but I don’t want to look at it every day.
I don’t subscribe to Tidal or Qobuz, although I try free trials whenever they crop up. Thus I think I’m missing a lot of the functionality.
A quick re-start of the NAIM fixed it and now working fine.
I’m liking it much more today, I’m back to light mode.
It’s now stable today, no crashes on the iPad so far. I don’t know if it was down to the load on the servers or a consequence of rebooting the iPad.
Discovery on classical music is excellent and generally things seem a step forward.
I do dislike parts of the home page though. If we could just hide or shrink things down like the recent listening section which for me will get less use than the Live Radio, Recent Artists and Genres that are below this large section. Maybe an option to reorder?
The other thing I would like to have the ability to shrink down is the Popular section on the Artists page. I’m more interested in the Albums in My Library section. In this respect I actually prefer the Discography tab which works well if you turn on the my library icon so you can which ones are ‘yours’.
There are many more subtle changes that I would like, many of which have already been raised (vented!) by others on the Roon forum. It must be difficult for Roon to balance all these views with over 100000 users having their own opinion!
I’m still getting used to the new layouts, seems very Apple like, the one feature that isn’t apparent is a listing of albums by artist that include the album ratings ?
Let’s see how we go when all the Roonies over the pond get out of bed
Have to say the update went quite smoothly yesterday and, even if there have been a few small glitches, like Radio Paradise getting lost, initial impressions are good!
I find the visual design of the new version to be far less polished and aesthetically pleasing than the earlier versions, with garish and clashing colours and photographs dramatically cropped by being constrained inside circles.
Most of all, I feel that the new version 1.8 has been designed for users of portrait mode on phones and small tablets. The visual appeal of the product on large widescreens has been dramatically diluted - everything crammed into the centre of the screen with empty spaces on both sides. It would also appear from comments made by other users that it’s no longer possible to increase the number of albums shown on screen in album view.
My comments are based on screenshots provided by Roon and others supplied by users on the Roon forum, because I have no intention of ‘upgrading’ to version 1.8 for a number of weeks until Roon has resolved some of the many glitches that have been reported by members. .
I had been delighted to find that my one and only issue prior to now (frequently missing metadata in Roon Radio) appears to have been resolved over the past couple of weeks prior to the 1.8 release, but my delight has been more than eclipsed by my dismay with the changes that have been made to the UI’s visual design.
I’m not convinced it’s as bad as it seems - filter out the transient problems that were due to the ‘update rush’, the self inflicted ‘issues’, and the ‘I want it my way’ rants, and look at what’s left.
I have updated. It works. I’m just going to play some music for a few weeks, take the maintenance releases when they come, and wait for the dust to settle.
Don’t like the purple bits though…
I did out the missing codecs but still not working
Server is gone…
Works great for me. I’ll get used to the differences. I only have one niggle and that is the size of the waveform. Would have liked it to stay as it was before. Other than that, I’m happy.
