Roon 1.8

Did you reboot as it says?

At least the OS is still up and running, meaning you still can access the share and manually backup your database

The more I use it, the more I think it has that ‘we’re all designers now’ vibe that came about with the introduction of MS Word. Just because you can make a title serif, doesn’t mean you should! It’s like they smoked a j, and just started randomly moving elements about and playing with fonts and type sizes etc until they got to ‘that looks cool’ with little thought to the overall big picture and design (or lack of) vs functionality. Very disappointing. No idea what the beta testers were doing (either sycophantic pats on the back or criticism that wasn’t listed to or both) but they need to widen the pool, that’s for sure.

Many times, i can access the nucleus but nothing iOS/mac sees the core

I see. I suppose it’s time to contact the Roon support team  Good luck

Forgot i had auto update on my iPad which went to 1.8 overnight forcing me to upgrade earlier than planned. Currently running new release without issues so been smooth so far.

Couple of things i dont understand are
the favourite/heart flag available for albums and artists… what purpose does it serve? cant be included in focus options nor searches that i can see as a filter.
Also, under focus - ratings is a ‘picks’ field… how is picks populated and what is it?

Roon forum is slow so maybe someone here has the answer?

I reinstalled the operating system with successfully after trying 300 times:)

Seems to be working now

Someday whole world will stop with a software glitch!

My observation is roon 1.8 is underwhelming - most of the features seem aligned with SongKong capability, and the revised interface is ‘meh’.

My install on Win10 NUC 7i5 ran well, as it did on 2 x iPad and 1 x iPhone.

Nothing done to improve RAAT sound quality (Naim multirron from my NDX2 to Atom and Qb2 is better).

No Amazon HD, no Spotify integration, to expand the potential user base.

Did they move Roon Core / server support for the Apple M1 processors from emulation mode to native ?

The heart is favorites and you can show favorites-only by clicking the heart top left, next to Focus

It can mean anything you want. I treat star ratings as a more objective thing (as they come prepopulated for most albums, though you can change them) and the favorites as my personal ones. So a seminal album can have 5 stars and I still don’t see it as a personal favorite.

If you click the heart of an album twice, it becomes the opposite of a favorite and is hidden from many views.

Picks are an option within the album/track editing menu,

Thanks for the info…

will play with the heart abit, i had ‘favourited’ a few albums by pressing the heart and then used focus heart option as you outlined but nothing showed, guess I was looking in wrong part of library after reading the doc

Will read about ‘picks’

I never had that, and just confirmed that it is still instant for me (but I have a very fast core on a dedicated NUC with Roon Rock and SSD)

Think i have it sorted now, have editted my initial response :+1:

Picks used to show as a tick in the bottom corner of the album artwork. As I understand it, someone and I dont know who decided it was a good album.
Dont know how it works in 1.8 as I have it turned off.

In 1.8 you may have to enable it in Settings > General > Album display, where you can also enable/disable many other icons to be shown on albums

Spoke too soon. Roon now crashing repeatedly on iOS iPad when scrolling in playlists and settings. The Roon Community is overloaded and not responding. Meltdown. Not used to such a shambles from Roon.

I’ve had one crash today while scrolling an album list and I have spent a lot of time in there. Yesterday evening it did it probably 6 times in a much shorter time period.

I wonder if it’s to do with load on Roon’s servers.

Well the iPhone app is working fine

No crashes yet on my iPad, iPhone or Mac.

I seems that the really new stuff is limited to certain artists - and to be fair, this is what they said in the announcement, when I read it again looking out for this.

E.g., I just found that for Van Morrison it shows on the album page of Astral Weeks:

  • Selected discography
  • Recommended albums apparently based on my library that seem to have some connection to Van Morrison or musicians on Astral Weeks
  • Explore other singers/songwriters from the same period

And on the Van Morrison artist page:

  • Recommended Van Morrison albums
  • Collaborators
  • Influences, Followers, Associated with, similar to how it was before but in the new look

So it would be nice if Valance did this automatically for all artists, but it’s a reasonable start
