Roon 1.8

This happen quite a lot on my iPhone when I try to put images into my contacts. Even when I reposition the image correctly I will often come back some time later to find the image has disoriented itself again. Not sure why this is but from what you are saying it isn’t an uncommon glitch.

I have to admit: It is not bothering me at all. As mentioned I am using roon for about three weeks now in total. (One week with 1.7, two weeks with 1.8) And it is bringing so much fun and benefits into my music enjoyment. I rediscovered so much artists and albums in my collection and I discovered a decent amount of new music thanks to roon. And honestly even with this little bug everything is much more stable than the Naim app for me. With ne Naim app I have to quit the app, reboot phones, disconnect and reconnect with networks. So a little flickering is not a big deal for me. Every day I am a little surprised by the hate I read and see in the roon forum concerning the 1.8 release. Of course I have a lot of respect for those who criticise roon 1.8 in that forum due to the experience they have, but for me in person everything is an improvement …

I’m sure they will fix it and I understand your joy, me too. I started in Nov and the 1.8 experience tended to be poor for people who had invested lots of time with 1.7 and earlier into tagging, bookmarks, etc., which broke. For those without a legacy baggage it surely was not such a big thing. The issues are being ironed out, so most should be back to normal soon. (Roon did mess up a bit, I don’t get how they could not see that changing the boolean logic of tags would break people’s stuff all over the place. But kudos to them for being responsive and fixing up things quickly)

Wildguess they may be using HTML (not uncommon to run on several platforms). You need to make sure you send a small initial code block that draws the background color immediately and not wait until you have the complete picture. It looks exactly like the videos I’ve seen of this problem and is very easy to fix. It can also be caused by the web-server zipping the code. What happens is the browser clears when you hit “send” and will stay clear until it has the first complete answer-block it can draw.

This is only one of many explanations. They have obviously not run complete testing … it will go away whatever its cause. But it is irritating. Apple itself had the same problem in Logic Pro which is a big native-coded application. It was soooo much nicer when they made it go away.

I noted Roon claims 100.000+ users. So 10 million dollars/year.

approaching 250,000 now

Not if you count the heap of lifetime users.

I had not had any issues with IOS until this evening. I think it started when I added a song to play next.

After this the app began to crash, When reloading it would flash white. But its now so unstable you can simply open it and then do nothing and after about 15 seconds it will crash of its own accord.

I’m looking at running a trail as I’m keen to try MQA through my NDX2 via Room on my iMac.

i think i have the same issue from time to time, pre 1.8 as well. Oddly, restarting the iOS fixes it.

Seems so!

I am surprised that you’ve involved ‘passionately’ on the Roon forum.

HI,
Yes - Roon had been a revelation for me when I first discovered it for myself 2 or 3 years ago or so. It transformed my music playing experience and it’s integration of streaming services with my own music library and its Roon Radio function made new music discovery a delight. This coupled with a UI that was to my eyes a thing of beauty and way better than any other music control app out there.

This initially changed dramatically for me with the recent release of Roon 1.8. Roon 1.8 was obviously designed with two main objectives:

  1. Moving the platform away from its widescreen desktop/laptop focus to a portrait oriented small tablet and phone focus. This has compromised the look and feel of the platform on large screens/monitors that are my preference.
  2. A search for something that is more ‘modern’, and more akin to the look and feel of a lot of the social media platforms. In doing this they decided on a ‘minimalist’ colour scheme comprising either a ‘dark’ theme of dark purple on a pure black background theme or a light theme of dark purple on a pure white background.

The whole visual experience for me and many others was fairly dramatically diminished.

However, the new version performs well and installed quickly and flawlessly when I decided to go ahead with the update. A number of enthusiastic members who felt much the same as me about the
stark look of the new UI managed to find ways of updating the ‘theme’ colour configuration files and shared this with the rest of us. Because of them I have been able make my own much more subtle colour themes than those of default version 1.8. A bit of a nuisance since they are overwritten with some of Roon’s bug fixes and have to be re-done. However, I now have a set up that I can happily live with even if it isn’t quite so ‘pretty’ as the UI in version 1.7.

My only real issue now is that I use an iPad Air as the Roon control for one of my systems, and there is no way for us to get at the relevant theme configuration files on the iPad. Hopefully, Roon will either allow some customisation by users or simply offer a number of more pleasing and more subtle colour themes in addition to the current two default themes. Dark purple on black is so uncomfortable on the eye and difficult to read, and black or dark purple on a pure white background even more so!

The new 1.8 version has worked fine until I installed the software update last night.
Now lots of album art missing. I’ve updated Windows 10 and un installed and re installed Roon 1.8 - no joy.

Many users on Roon forum have this problem.

I’ve re installed the older 1.7 version and it works fine. Album covers now visible.

I’ve not noticed any issue with missing album art…only running the client on Windows 10. Rock running on NUC

Latest version is all sorts of fubar. Getting rather peeved with them at the moment. I can’t use my windows remote at all since this update.

No problems at all for me (Windows version on Linux, Android, and Rock on NUC)

It was fine until this release then pow as soon as you switch on show more album covers it breaks. Can’t get to artists pages from links on albums any more it just hangs. I uninstalled it and removed the Roon folder to remove the settings, installed it again it worked turned on show more album covers tried to click on an artist bang hangs again. Now it’s stuck everytime I open Roon it’s trying to open the same artist page and locking up. Doesn’t do it on my phone or tablet.

Qobuz has lots of missing albums in Roon that don’t show up but are in the Roon database you can’t search for them as they don’t come up, but add them in Qobuz app low and behold there they are. God knows how many albums that’s affecting as many of us have experienced it. Lots of other database stuff still.wrong from initial move to 1.8 it screwed all all my compilations and lost all the artists on the songs had to re-identify them all again to fix it.

Also lost several endpoints with this update that took having to reboot core twice and my network. All was fine up until installing update.

There are loads of albums missing now in Discograpy that used to show and I lost all album covers on Android earlier in day for no reason. This version infact 1.8 in general is a mess. Its an update that in hindsight needed a lot more beta testing it should have never been released. Now issues that where present in 1.7 and still in 1.8 are getting further away from being sorted such as Roon radio mess.

I am far from happy with them right now. Suppoet has almost disappeared and seems to be one person doing it all. I have 4 tickets still unresponded to one of which was from week one of 1.8 They need to sort their stuff out as I am not the only one very unhappy and disappointed with then right now. If there was something to move to I would not hesitate right now and I have been a loyal user for 4 years.

No problem here, new release working perfectly.

Same here, no problems with the latest update installed just tonight.
