Roon sold to Harman. Implications?

Linn Beta installation is pretty straightforward, and you would need to go to Settings → Audio to re-enable the Linn streamer, then your streamer will show up as Roon Ready, wow!

Everything looks correct in the default device settings (max pcm 384 khz/24 bit, max dsd DSD256).

it is definitely a good step forward for Linn/Roon.

If you have a quiet music-server (I have a Melco modified with a low-noise OXCO-clock with its own low-noise LPS) my experience is the SSD makes a diff. I have not measured (yet) but a guess might be electric noise of some form, my favorite right now is the Samsung PM893 Data Center SSD unit, but it is double the price compared to their normal EVO units.

Source first.

Ok… it’s been a few days now with the M2 + Roon early access versions of the software.

Initially everything was extremely fast but after a couple of days a bit of lag was appearing within genres and scrolling again (early access Build 1368). No where near as bad as before. Obviously the M2’s additional power made up for the drop in performance compared to the Rock NUC.

Even so, the performance boost for importing, creating backups, rebooting, general use and that I could use a Sudo command in Mac Terminal to automatically restart the M2 Mini overnight I was happy to keep the M2 mini… it was a lot better.

Then there was a new early access release. Build 1373. This also has some new playlist features which are very useful… and a couple not so useful (to me anyway). However, the main thing is a boost in performance. This sealed the deal and the M2 is definitely staying.

It’s been a couple of days with build 1373 and I’m not seeing the lag return. Scrolling on the early access iPad and iPhone apps is also improved. Not perfect, still a little jittery at times but a lot smoother. A few tweaks to the new Playlist Sidebar are needed I feel but I do like the new playlist folders option and that playlists now update in Qobuz when you add tracks to them in Roon.

Not sure how long Early Access versions take to reach general release but setting up early release is fairly straight forward. Just google “roon early access program” and you should find a page for it if you’re interested.

Thanks Andy - that’s some useful info and thanks for the pointer to the early access program. Looks like it’s going to be a crappy weekend weather wise, so i’ll have some time for a play.

The general rule was Early release came out about 2 weeks before production unless had a major bug. So even though there might be complaints about how new playlist sidebar looks, it still might be released to public anyway and maybe fine tuned in another release. For the most part, early releases are generally safe and are actually one phase after their closed beta testing.

Yeah, the sidebar playlist isn’t a deal breaker as is. I just set it to auto close on the desktop app the same way it does on the iPad version. Also, I like the cog on the sidebar for settings. It’ll look a lot neater!

I think given the performance improvements I experienced… and hopefully others, it’s definitely worth releasing sooner rather than later!

@Simon-in-Suffolk @Sloop_John_B - update on the previous replies…

Tried out Room this evening on free trial. Running on a 2017 iMac (with FLAC on an SSD) WiFi’d to AirPort Extreme which is then hard wired via Ethernet to the NSS333.

Control via Roon app on iPhone.

A few observations from a Roon novice;

  1. SQ definitely not as good as UPnP hard wired via Synology NAS. Is this due to the use of WiFi for the Roon server on the iMac?

  2. With all settings off (DSP, volume Eq etc), certainly needs a few blips on the remote to get the same volume level.

  3. Actual app interface is brilliant. If I can get to the UPnP SQ via Roon then I’m all in. May try a long cat5 cable tomorrow evening from iMac to the Aiport Extreme to see if it makes a difference.:man_shrugging:t3:

No, unlikely… more to ro do with driver implementation in streamer. I use separate DAC which lessens this.

Can you make a screenshot of the signal chain when playing in Roon?

Will be a few days unfortunately - it seemed quite simple though - Roon server (FLAC) into the 333 (acting as the RAAT) then on to audio output…from what I recall.

Looks like Roon have just implemented a change that removes my last real bugbear with it. It was the case that if you had a Qobuz playlist that you listened to in Roon and you wanted to add a track you discovered in Roon, you would have to go back to Qobuz to edit the playlist. That can now be done in Roon and it will feedback to Qobuz. A very positive, customer feedback related, change.

That and you can now create folders for different playlists. The playlist sidebar is still a work in progress with new variations in the early release versions of the Roon Core.

I had a response from Roon about the performance issues I was experiencing. They said from the data I provided to them they have been able to make good progress in resolving it and that there should be changes in future releases to improve it. Here’s hoping!

Very good, early days but they appear to have their focus back.

I’m about to download the update.

Check out my post #35 in this thread. The tips helped me for SQ.

And Roon have just announced a $499 new Nucleus. Customer must add their own drive.

Interesting - i thought the price was wrong thinking it was the new Titan, but the Nucleus One is very cheap ! (for Roon)

Yeah this is a good move for them! My Roon Nucleus is about 5 yrs old . . I dont want to jinx it but it’s NEVER needed a hard reboot or any attention other than updating the Core software from within the Roon app, when the app tells me there’s an update.
