Hi to all; I have a Virgin router which is located beneath my NDX2 & Supernait 2. Below that is a HiCap & CD player.
The router is very close to my NAS and I was wondering if this could cause any issues like RFI interference to the other parts of the system.
I’m changing my lounge around in the future and I was thinking of relocating the router upstairs or at least not in the lounge.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
The switching mode power supply is not ideal near your hifi. Also if you have the possibility of having your hifi on a separate mains ring that would be nice too
Yes, I agree on the PSU. The power supply from the mains is a single 2:5mm cable to four MK unswitched sockets.
Hi , if you can , move the router away .
The router in the same room is not a problem, placing it in another room might cause more problems than you have now.
Virgin recommend >1m away from audio equipment, so 2m is OK.
Out in the open, don’t hide it inside a cabinet or behind something.
Off the floor, on a cabinet, shelf or table.
It’s best to power the router with a linear power supply. The improvement in sound quality is striking. I use an SBooster for this.
I had a feeling the router might be too close to the black boxes, but I’ll see what I can do about that.
I do intend on a lounge refurbishing project quite soon as the router will live either in my kitchen or upstairs somewhere. Upstairs wood be better from a Virgin Media standpoint but I see how that works.
In the meantime I’ve just purchased an EE8 switch and I look forward to plugging that in soon.
Could you expand on that point about putting the router in another room causing problems? And is that just the Virgin router or BT as well. Thanks
Hi @johns ….. this applies to any router that’s streaming over wireless.
Some posts were contemplating the routers RF effects on a streamer and that another room might be better.
My post is suggesting this is a problem when the router and streamer are placed too close, Virgin and BT, and I assume it’s the same for others, recommend >1m … so a router to streamer distance of around 2m or more is OK.
My point is that wireless streaming in the room is OK, but although between rooms is not normally a problem, stone, brick & block walls (as I have) can cause problems such as dropouts.
Best by far, is Ethernet.
