Saying (maybe a temporary) goodbye to Naim

I accept what OP is saying but I do think that Naim cater to many customers with their lifestyle products. However, I still love the core of what this company is all about and I hope they dont deviate from that. After all, thats what brought about the success.

Personally i’m increasing my number of boxes by going active with DBLs and I couldnt be happier.

No confirmation bias there. I ran the same test. Adding a Qutest to the WiiM improved it significantly. Replacing the WiiM in streamer mode with an Innuos Pulse was another obvious improvement. It’s just a fact. Whether it’s worth the money to you or anyone else is of course a judgment call.

So you now have the Luxman L-509X in the house. Detail and refinement it’s surely ahead of the 282/250DR. Is it new or used? You can give it few hours or days though the sound won’t change much. My 590AXII Class A already sounds leaner and brighter than the fuller sounding Naim, so I’m not surprised you find that to be the case with the 509X.

My exact reasoning, no one in my family was even remotely interested in a multi box system. I doubt they could even shut it down without the risk of damaging something.

I’ve made it easier for them I now only have “one box” setup.

It’s worth remembering when down sizing most of us here still end up with a hi fi that’s worth more than most people they know have. Even after my exchange I’ve still got a set up worth more than $20k.

It’s not like we’ve ended up with a baker light 3 in 1 from His Masters Voice. :upside_down_face:

I guess I will never understand voluntary system downsizing, other than very specific circumstances. Maybe it is significant that I have never been ‘hooked’ into a manufacturer led upgrade path, or been into chasing perfection with constant changes or tweaks, but have simply had a clear idea of what I was after in terms of sound and gradually evolved my system until I felt I had reached it.

Simplification is another matter, if people’s systems have become so complex that they require constant maintenance, or if they are having consideration for loss of ability, or shuffling off this mortal coil, and the ease of some taking over.

That’s very true @Pete_the_painter - for most folk, a Uniti and speakers is hi-end, even a Muso would be a luxury. We often loose perspective on the hifi journey.

It’s a very first world issue and like you said there needs to be some perspective.

Wow, that’s genuinely impressive you ended up using the bike to commmute so much!! I think you’re right I need to just get out there more! I have good waterproofs so that’s not the issue really - it’s more just that my older self is getting more inclined to want to spend what limited leisure time I have around work doing the things I enjoy most. The truth is I love being on the bike in warmer nicer weather so it’s never a struggle to get out there in spring/summer. However I much prefer sitting by the fire listening to music or watching a movie or doing some writing than cycling when it’s cold and gloomy/raining/dark in November.

I bought a decent indoor exercise bike and rowing machine during Covid, but I find it utterly boring compared to real riding, so I can’t say I derive any great pleasure from using it.

One major factor is that since we got the ebikes we haven’t had a viable means of transporting them by car to go and explore some new areas and it gets boring riding the same few local routes over and over again. This is about to change though because we’re having a tow bar fitted to the new car and all I need to do then is to get a suitable ebike compatible rack and we will have a world of new riding locations to explore.

I think that’s what I need really, the ability to ride in some new locations to make things feel fresh again because the ebikes are absolutely brilliant and have enabled me to enjoy riding again despite ankle arthritis.

I’m sensible enough to know that exercise and physical fitness is important so I do want to keep active as much as possible well into the future. I’m just hoping that the bike racks will keep things interesting as too often recently I have found it a bit of a grind riding the same old trails in Autumn over and over again for the thousandth time…

We got a tow bar and rack for our e-bikes earlier this year for just that reason. It’s been brilliant.

My dealer in Washington DC closed. Two of three closed in the past few years. Warranty likely expired.

I might as well see if I can open the case and find what’s rolling around in there. It sounds smaller than a screw.

No remote and I doubt the 50 has the steam to drive my Dyn Special Twenty Five speakers adequately. And what do I do with my HCDR?

Most usually it’s something like a tiny solder blob. The transformer’s shape and large size mean that when everything is finally cleaned and blown out, despite best efforts, sometimes something can get caught underneath.

No remote? Well you did say you wanted something designed for purists!

I reckon your Dynaudio Special Twenty Five speakers should be fine with a Nait 50. According to the Dynaudio website, those speakers have a sensitivity of 88dB for 2.83V at 1m. I am using a Nait 50 to drive Falcon Gold Badge LS3/5a loudspeakers most successfully and these have a sensitivity of just 83dB for 2.83V at 1m.

As for the HiCap, well you might wish to use it to power a streamer. Alternatively you could sell it to fund the majority of the cost of the N50 at current prices.

Same for me.

It helped that my commute was only 3 miles!

Re towbar bike carrier, as I’m sure you’re aware a limitation is weight as e-bikes tend to be heavy, and bigger higher weight capacity carriers add even more weight, and you need to watch total weight on towbar as well as carrier weight. I have a Thule VeloCompact, which weighs 14kg, has max individual bike capacity of 25kg and total bikes 46kg. My wife’s bike is about 26 but has a removable battery so we do that. We use with campervan, where total weight is more limited because it is on a swing arm to allow access to rear when loaded (carrier can tilt down, which is ok for many car boots but not van doors). Not having any local choice I found The Roof Box Company had good choice and prices.

If it’s a screw or blob of solder it could cause a problem if it lands on the PCB

The PCB is on the left. So tip the amp so the loose item rests at the right hand side where it won’t cause a problem. It shouldn’t move when you level the amp.

You certainly don’t need to downgrade by getting just one box to do what 4, or 10 boxes once did. Just buy the right one box and you are sorted. Just as I did.
