I’m starting to realise that I’ve accumulated more stuff than I need. As I’m doing a purge across many areas, think my stereo stuff is now in my sights.
So I’ve basically got three Naim systems and one ‘other’ which isn’t going anywhere. My 200/202/NDX I think will become my primary again; Pioneer/RP3 is the secondary. Which leaves my UQ2 and 172/155 kind of vying for the office slot.
SQ-wise, it’s going to be a small room with volumes pretty low. I can’t see there being much difference between the two.
Besides size / form factor, is there any reason to consider one vs the other? I really can’t think of one thing from a pure functionality perspective (except the 172 has a volume dial - which I like) that either can’t do.
Or I just put some of it in storage and consider it for another day.
Suppose it depends on 2nd hand value.
There was a power cut this morning; my UQs took a couple of hrs to be recognised on my network but the NDS was there immediately. So I would keep the newest and most reliable item of kit. I’m not so worried about SQ these days.
How’s the UQ screen? They have a finite life and can die off quite quickly. This is OK if it’s set up as you can control from the app but it can be a pain if you need to restore network settings etc. They can be replaced at a cost.
I wouldn’t put an unused system into storage. Prices have dropped significantly for 1st gen equipment, but they can only fall further as they age. Anything with a working screen might come out of storage without it. If you change your mind in future you can always buy another cheap 1st gen streamer when and if you actually need it.
Here’s another suggestion - sell the whole lot and you could probably afford a used Atom. That would future proof your streamer and give you a compact office system.
Me too - the better part of 10 years. UQ1 then an upgrade to the 2. Probably spend 2/3 of my listening time on it. But would you keep it over a 172/155? One of these are going to be surplus to requirements soon…
I had the UQ2 in the office and loved it - my Naim entry point. shifted it for the Atom which has given me access to Tidal Connect as well as streaming with Synology UPNP and internet radio improvements. Depends on which source you use constantly I guess!
I like the multi-room play function but afraid that Mrs Finkle will continue to insist on the HomePod in the kitchen as well (with it’s all important timer functionality - thanks Apple for having only one thing in the HomeKit that’s useful )
So there’s possibility of 2 competing music units in there. But yes, as ice breakers go, could be a good one. We’re moving into a new house so will see how it goes
