Shipping broken unit to Focal Naim America

I’m sending my broken Star to Focal Naim in Quebec via FedEx to get repaired and it’s going to cost nearly $450 since I’ll be insuring it for $7k. FedEx recommended air shipping as it’s fragile vs.ground which is of course, more costly.

Has anyone opted NOT to buy insurance for the full cost being that it’s a broken product anyway and not valued at the purchase price?

Has anyone opted to ship ground vs.air and is air really that critical?

Broken or not it would be best to purchase insurance and tracking. As for shipping ground or air, the distance would be a factor, though I did not encounter any issues when ground shipping was used to ship my Linn LP12, XS integrated amp, and XS Flatcap from California to Ontario and my speakers from New York. On the other hand, it would be best to arrange through a Naim dealer to ship the Star to be repaired.

Check with your Home Owners Insurance. Some policies may cover your property when being shipped. (assuming you have home owner’s insurance)

I’d just send it FedEx ground, double boxed. I use them regularly and have had no issues.

Did you insure it to the original cost of the unit when you used FedEx or a partial amount since it’s broken anyway?

Thanks for this.

The local Naim dealer (not the one I purchased it from who retired and shut) is not willing to deal with you unless you bought it from them. Is this the case for all Naim dealers - if you didn’t buy it from them, go elsewhere??

Check out used values for your product and insure at that price. FedEx’s insurance will only pay-out at a used price anyway.

I’m not surprised they turned you down. It’s important to remember most dealers are small operations. So not so much tough luck, more like we don’t have the bandwidth to deal with stuff we didn’t sell. They’re not a “big-box” retailer or Amazon Prime.

When I have to send something, I ask my dealer, as he has a subscription with FedEx.
I last sent my Ear pre via him. I costed me 80 euros.

Wondering, if you have contacted Focal Naim Canada. If not

The best bet for service is Focal/Naim Canada. They will have you ship to a location just across the border after you open a ticket and get a Return Authorization Number. FedEx is the carrier I’d recommend. Double boxing is required,

Thanks. Yes, I’ll ship to QC and double box it. I’m in BC.

@parksung - I believe F N N. America uses FedEx ground. As advised above (if you have not done it yet) you can contact them (via e-mail below) and explain your issue. They should advise and open a ticket if they are to do the job.

Exactly, living in Canada contact Focal/Naim Canada. They will have you ship to a location just across the border after you open a ticket and get a Return Authorization Number. As suggested above, they can be contacted at ticket@focal-naim.com or CAN 1-866-271-5689 # 2

I’d recommend the insurance, broken or not. The issue would be if the unit suffered additional damage during transport or is lost, without insurance your payout will be $100.

It is important for dealers to remember that attitude toward potential customers will insure their operations remain small.

I agree… but that’s at the dealers discretion.
