Very nice too. Are they the super duper spesh edishes?
They’re the gold badge edition with transformer type crossovers, which are faithful to the original BBC specification.
Those are lovely too. Are they v2 or v3? I would like to hear those too one day.
Stirling V3’s Clive. Only LS3/5a’s I’ve heard, so can’t compare to anything else.
Lovely @carruthersesq
Thank you Blackstar.
Beautiful, did you had the opportunity listen both “standard gold Badge” vs the “Special limited BBC edition” version before your purchase ?
Any feedback to share ?
No I didn’t as I bought these ex-demo. Besides, these are intended for a garden room system with ND5XS2 and SN3. They won’t be in my main system once the room is finished. They do sound remarkably good here though, which does lend weight to the source first argument.
I could pack them up again and revert to the Kudos T808s, but I am enjoying music from the LS3/5as too much at the moment.
Mine are currently putting Van Morrison Live at Orangefield front and centre in my room. Perfect antidote to a frustrating day working.
Trying Audiochic stands with the Harbeths. Very wobbly on the rubber feet so might have to order the spikes.
Hello all, my LS3/5a 11ohm speakers are currently sat on my desk, on isoacoustic mini stands. Great as that is, I can feel them busting to get a bit wider apart and a little further away from the wall. I’ve therefore been researching stands. May I ask what members are using? I can see lots of Solid Steel, but I’m not sure that’s quite the right aesthetic for me. Current front runners are Custom Design, which seem to make a few different “open frame” stands. I really like the monolithic look of the “Classic 404”. Thanks!
I need some advice. Our dealer has Musical Fidelity LS3/5A. Is it the same as Falcon LS 3\5a?
Have a look at markhennessey dot co dot uk and search the HiFi tab - he writes quite a comprehensive history and assessment of the LS3/5a and all the past and current manufacturers. I have the Falcon Gold Badge models, which are alleged to be the closest to the original BBC specifications, although I suspect the latest Rogers models might also be pretty close. You’d have to investigate the MF models to see how close they come. Many manufacturers have modified the design owing to the unavailability of the original drivers, but only you can decide if they sound right for you.
I don’t think so. As Clive says, Falcon builds their own components from scratch to match the original design. For what it’s worth, I saw the MF ones advertised on an American site as ‘Focal Musical Fidelity’.
I believe one of the mags/review sites had an Ls3/5a shootout a year or two back which included the MF option. Fwiw I think they liked Falcon and GA Chartwell best but there weren’t any duds iirc.
The Musical Fidelity should be built to the same BBC specification as Falcon, Graham Audio and Rogers LS3/5A , I haven’t seen a head to head comparison in many years .
When I did the reviewer said there were differences , even though in theory they should have been identical
“Identical” is in the eyes of the beholder!
My only possible contribution is, I’ve heard an original Rogers LS5/9 and a couple of times the new Graham one, and they could hardly be more different.
Sorry this is a bit off topic but were the original LS3/5a licence holders Chartwell, Rogers, Goodmans, Audiomaster, Spendor? Or were there others too?
Edit: after a bit of googling, Harbeth, Ram and KEF too.
(I should not have let my Chartwells go. One of a very few audio regrets)
