What goes around, comes around. COBOL programmers are in high demand these days.

Wow!

A few years ago I did write some COBOL to parse XML and put it in an Oracle database. This was just done for fun and clearly there are more suitable programming languages for parsing text :slightly_smiling_face:

Typical, they insisted on us coding in Algol 68, I have never seen it used anywhere outside of Uni campus. A fair few rebelled and used Fortran 77. TBH, I found Algol to be especially fussy with regards to syntax, I guess that’s what being brought up on Cecil and Basic does for you. Ironically I would resort to Machine code for basic tasks, somehow I had a better grasp of the simple instructions as it felt more like a hardware implementation which I was more familiar with. I later gave up most high-level software, bar some specialist industrial stuff, moving onto more hardware-orientated disciplines. For me, it felt like you needed a special kind of brain to master software which I didn’t seem to have. :0(

You are right @Alley_Cat i just bashed the text in, it was of course cesil, all programmed through a stack of punched cards, those were the days!

I wondered and it seems there was a Cecil too!
