I was reading last night on the Kindle so lights out and French doors open.
Snuffle.. snuffle.
I hadn’t seen a hog in the garden for a couple of years. Ever since the route was blocked by new neighbour’s fencing. Determined explorers.
I encouraged future appearances with posh peanut butter and crumbled corned beef. Nothing left within the hour.
I will get some cat food this afternoon.

You can get specialist food from the Big River .
I have put two bowls of water out in this weather. I do like feeding them , but I have grain fields behind me and not all visitors are welcome

A few days ago during the heatwave, on a bicycle ride going through a nearby village, i saw ahead of me what appeared to be road-kill, but as i approached could see it was a hedgehog but moving very slowly.
It was 6 pm, sunny, and very hot so this hedgehog was out of place and time. I stopped close by the hedgehog to block any motor vehicle from doing the obvious… but fortunately the road was quiet at this time.
The hedgehog may of been disoriented, it walked far too slowly, but i waited for him to cross the road safely, cross a pavement and into the driveway of a well foliaged garden. I knocked the door of the household but no answer no one in, was going to ask if they could help with some water, cat or dog food, cool shady shelter…
At least this hedgehog had ground cover out of the sun, and hopefully survived (?).

house. At the moment unoccupied, but a visitor overwintered
Hedgehogs are like our wombats, easy prey for predators plus they end on country roads as roadkill unfortunately. They’re also not well received by most farmers.

Walter has just been irrigated and is most offended. Had he heeded his father’s ’stop lizarding’ command, he would have avoided it.

He has made wonderful progress, thanks. He’s still rather hysterical around other dogs, particularly when on lead. That may or may not improve. Loud bangs are still a problem. He’s not keen on strangers making a fuss of him, he prefers to introduce himself on his own terms. Anyway, he’s certainly enjoying his life with us.

All of our Cattle Dogs have been better off the lead than on it, think dogs feel vulnerable if can’t run away. He looks like his settling in though.

Usually hedgehogs out in the daytime are in trouble so if you’ve a local sanctuary it’s worth contacting them. If safe to do so keep the hedgehog safe and cool (with water) until it can be taken to the sanctuary. Also, never feed fish based food or milk to hedgehogs. Great to see so many people caring about these amazing little creatures - really good slug and snail ‘deterrents’ for gardeners too. We’ve had many visit our garden over the years. Always a treat to see.

Mr Tux, the angriest cat in the village, visited here today to inspect how the landscaping was progressing, however he was furious when Disa told him that his nemesis; Magnus calls around twice a day for breakfast and supper.
Mr Tux said no amount of Dreamies could compensate this foul betrayal, although the generous handful he got did stop him growling while hoovering them all up.

Just as I was taking a snap of Samuel Smith’s Organic Chocolate Stout for the beer thread, Mo sees me from a distance and takes interest. I thought him being a Chocolate BSH would be a perfect prop, so became optimistically excited. Unfortunately as you know, never work with animals or children in photoshoots. This is the best I got, completely in the wrong position, before he ran away laughing.
The beer was absolutely beautiful.

Call from the vet 3 am this morning, little Winston one of our cats, he had to be put down. We are devastated. I am angry too, the vets did not react fast enough. We had 3 visits before tests were run on friday, they waited for the results before orderings meds and treatment……poor little guy did not stand a chance, but he fought it, none the less.
