These are pictures of my phono cartridges.
First a 35 + year old Denon MC 303. Refurbished and equipped with a VandenHull needle. It’s still sounding fabulous on it’s original Denon DP60l turntable. And for less well preserved records a AT VM 740 on a AT LP 140 turntable. Also nice equipment to listen to. All connected to a Naim SuperNait 2 and PMC fact 8 speakers.
Take a look at my original post where I was using a Quintet Black S whilst my Dynavector was being retipped. The Black really impressed me. Whilst not in the same league as my DrT. It none the less was a very enjoyable and detailed listen. It was mounted on an SMEV on an Avid Acutus!

Hi
I didn’t do a comparison but the body is much more robust with no slots and is milled from solid and tapped for the bolts.
Very similar to RigB but the TrigB has the three point mount for the Linn arms with three point mount.
It really is a bargain for the cost and lasts forever no moving parts.
Cymbiosis has some just now with Troika Red bodies on.
Stylus is replaceable and interchangeable to suit budgets too.
I love it.
Thanks @Teskey. I just found out they don’t make the Quintet series anymore, it’s been replaced by the MC X range. The equivalent to the quintet black is the MC X40. The reviews look very good so far
I guess it’s a slow transition. The quintet black and the x40 are both Ortofon mc cartridges with shibata stylus and cost the same (but the quintet black is now discounted in a few places). Here are a few articles on new x series range if you were interested:
Some interesting comments from Fremer on using low impedance MC cartridges with a low cost transimpedance amp into a MM stage rather than a step up transformer.
He auditioned $269 Hagerman Audio Labs Piccolo Zero amp with the Ortofon X40 (6Ω internal impedance, .5mV output), the Lyra Atlas Lambda SL (.25mV output, 1.52Ω internal impedance) and and MuTech RM-HAYATE (.45mV, 1.75Ω internal impedance).
I have an Atlas SL and Atlas Mono. I think I’ll stand pat with the Boulder phono-stage I already have.
I’m about to get a 3rd tonearm, and will need another phono-stage for that, eventually. I’m considering the Boulder 508. I don’t have a MM input so a transimpedance or SUT isn’t on my radar anyway.
AT VM 95ML for my Denon DP60L. It doesn’t sound spectacular, just right/balanced to my ears with no sibilance or IGD. Very fine mm cart with microline stylus for not much money.
I bought a Piccolo Zero as I thought it might be a cheap stop gap for feeding my stageline N while my superline was in Salisbury. The stock SMPS had rather a negative impact on my 552, when judged using my ND555 but I made up a cable to power it from one rail of a spare Hicap. It worked OK with the 2Ω SPU Century, though a bit on the quiet side and rather flat sounding, but for reasons I can’t fathom it made very little sound with my 1Ω Transfiguration Proteus whatever setting I tried. I didn’t have the 7Ω SPU Royal N set up at the time. I found a 26:1 Sculpture A SUT much more appealing, though at six times the price it damned well should.
