180g has become a marketing gimmick, its meaningless, there is far more to a good pressing than the weight of vinyl.
Doesnt matter how heavy it is if its pressed on a dog turd!

Typically, vinyl LPs were much thicker in the 1960s and 1970s. Global oil prices have risen substantially since then (there have been constant Middle Eastern wars and conflicts).

So one way to cut production costs is to use less vinyl in each LP.

I expect that record companies try a little bit harder, when producing a product that carries a premium price, to produce a better product.

While I’m in no mood to check presently, I don’t recall many if any of my oldest records being as thick as the ‘new breed’ (talking about edge thickness here). And there was Dyna-Flex, which certainly wasn’t.

Edit\ curiousity aroused, I just did a weight check on two samples from the same company:
Elektra LP 1968 = 160gm.
Elektra LP 2021 = 180gm.

Obviously, both were pressed at different plants 1968 in England / 2021 in EU, but even so…

Not sure how I did it, honestly

:hushed::rofl:

Never mind the quality…feel the width!

As Mrs Dread says, it aint the size its what you do with it!

Have you joined Weightwatchers?

Only this once, Dread.

I’m skinny enough, like my favourite pressings!

After nearly 30 years from my last Sondek, i was thinking to come back with a new one (or preowned). It could be a Lp12 with Kore subchassis, krane arm, Adikt MM + Lingo 4 . For a start i’d use my Stageline MM into 552. A big problem is that i could place the deck atop of the far right Fraim, Lingo and Stageline on the bottom shelf. The problem is reaching the 552 on the far left Fraim. Is it possible to use a longer Snaic for the job ? At a later stage is the internal module Urika a good option ?

@rsch my suggestion (sorry) I would move the PSU to the right Fraim stack and then place LP12 on the middle of the 3 racks

I have my LP12 on the top of my 1 stack and works very well with great isolation

on Urika, last week we did a good listening session @Cymbiosis when we tried Rega Aura vs Urika - Aura was lovely phono but a little too bright for me and I felt both the Lyra and Linn cartridges had a better more musical presentation which I prefer

I use Urika in my deck (Stiletto, Keel, Ekos SE) - I would also suggest RCA to DIN with 552, I have Chord Signiture to my 252 with plenty of room for cable dressing

Thank you for your reply,
Aside shorter cable, is there a specific reason to put it in the middle ?it would require another Fraim stack, plus having psu’s underneath, i’m not sure is ideal. Also, unless i will have Urika inside, LIngo and pre pre would remain on the far right

@rsch yes the Urika is an in deck fitting on LP12 the Tramp base is removed for the Urika base the lead for power and 552 can then feed into Lingo 4 & 552

my suggestion would then be
Rack 1 (left)
LP12
552
Middle
CD555
500
Lingo 4
Rack 3 (right)
all PSU

this should also good cable dressing and give you as short a possible lead from Lp12 to 552

Thank you!

The advice looks good, but (as someone who owns no 500-series) I did have couple of thoughts.

First, some find the Urika can lean toward being kind, while the Aura can be found overly crisp and less than relaxing. Wouldn’t a Superline be worth considering too?

I have had issues with rack order, and fitting everything in, and found a couple of things helpful.

First a Lingo 4 is small, so small that on my rack it can sit behind another box. It also doesn’t mind placement itself, though you’ll want to keep it away from pre-amp and phono stage if you can. In my system, the important thins with a lingo (old or new) is that the SQ is better IMHO if the Lingo is not on the same socket as the Naim kit, and ideally not on the same radial.

Second, my old CDS2 seems not to care too much about being close to a power supply, but Superline and pre-amp certainly do. This may support @antz 's suggestion of having LP12 far left and CD555 in the middle.

Getting every PS to the right if you can should also help, but don’t expect a big difference.

As mentioned by others, the messing about with cable-dressing can be very helpful IMHO, esp if you use standard Naim unshielded cables.

Finally, given the quality of the rest of the system, can I suggest a far-from-new Ekos and a cartridge a little better than an Adikt?

Dunno, I’ll ask the bloke next door!

Yes, absolutely agreed.

My old but never opened Lingo 1 was more of a problem than the L4 but (unless my ears deceive me, which is always possible), it’s the same issue.
