At the risk of going off topic, and straying into modification territory, it is possible to coat the platter once the old coating is cleaned off. As mentioned above with Autoglym. Once this is done, with the aid of an old inner platter & bearing spindle in a vice, I cleaned with alcohol and then used satin clear ‘Plasticoat’ applied sparingly whilst spinning the platter. I did this some 5 or more years ago, and it is still all good. Obviously best plan is to avoid all contact of fingers with the outer platter as a matter of course.

I got a 2nd hand outer platter for a great price. it was green with old lacquer!
I spent 90 mins using metal stain remover to get the crap off the metal. it turned out very well, but I didn’t have a paste or wax to finish it off. 18 months later, my occasional fingerprints are etched into the metal! I am polishing again and will now use a wax to seal the metal.

Mcjt1, Or try my suggestion above?

I read about “PlastiKote”. it sounds interesting.
Wax: I can use it on my platter AND my car

I know it’s all a matter of taste, but I think I prefer Linn platters when they have a patina to them, rather than when they’re shiny. My platter is completely dulled and I really wouldn’t want to polish it, even if I could be bothered.

TheKevster, your platter looks fine and I wouldn’t recommend anyone to strip and polish a platter in that condition. It’s only in the case of the dreaded ‘platter blight’ (TM@Tibbs), where the platter looks stained in places that a polish can at least offer a uniform look. It can then be waxed to prevent finger marks and allowed to dull over time.

Are the newer platters prone to marking from finger prints too? I noticed the dealer pop on a pair of cotton gloves when he dismantled my deck before I took it home.

I’ve made sure my hands were washed and free of any skin oil before setting it back up. Surely that should be enough precaution?

I find the fickleness of the LP12 precious platter sheen one of a few Linn annoyances, why o why can’t they make a platter side that doesn’t smudge to hell at the slightest finger touch?

I have an older type platter that i polished to high heaven, it looks bling-great IMO, however i understand folk who don’t feel a need to buff up their shiny borble.

Meanwhile i have another issue with my newer platter that happened a couple of months ago while i moved my LP12; during this adventure i firstly very carefully removed the outer platter from inner like you should, and then thoughtfully stowed it under the safety of an armchair. All well and good so far but a little later when i was holding a squirmy burndy cable i’d just unplugged, and while holding it one end the other slipped out of my other hand and swung in an ark which terminated in a clang as the big metal burndy connector scored a bullseye on the platter under the armchair… couldn’t have done that if i tried! :grimacing:

Anyway, at first i didn’t notice any damage, didn’t think it’d done any, but with platter back on and spinning there is a small and irregular pit on the side orbiting around at 33.3 rpm, looks like a small moon crater :unamused:

And the sound now? If improved patent it and market the mod. Moon Krater

@Debs Guess I can, I usually do. I got a notification/badge the other day for using 50 likes x 5 times, but I honestly can’t recall ever getting that message, or running out!

@Debs Probably yes a K9, I am really sorry for the slow reply. It’s been a roller coaster of a day. :slightly_frowning_face:

@Debs Bit of a spur of the moment idea, had to find an easy way to make a delivery. I think that I counted 61, in one go, which is odd. As I said without DS here, mine have dropped - no one to like some of the obscure discs I like. :upside_down_face:

Yes it did look like bubble wrap in my picture. That was quite a good bedroom system before I moved out of my parents house!

Has anybody yet got an actual example of the "any colour " plinths?

I think some of the non - Linn plinths look fantastic , just wondered if there had been any takers for the new Linn colour options?

How about this? This was discussed on another forum.
