I don’t think the planar 3 ever had a wood surround, but the planar 2 fits the description.

I stand corrected. Missed the wood surround bit.

My planar 3 was a single piece plinth with a dark grey slate like veneer… it looked really nice. I bought a few years on from the wedding in about 86/87… I don’t know what model my sisters boyfriend’s was. You might well be right

Nice. Did you have another cartridge before the krystal? I tried the klyde but didn’t really get on with it so went for the akiva which I thought was amazing.
I must admit though that I’m not keen to get rid and change the original plinth on my 1984 LP12 even though it has some marks.

@bruss @Canaryfan I think this is the one…

That is a Rega Planar 2, with the Rega R200 arm - but thats not the Rega Headshell…?? (maybe an ADC…?)

Felt mat - ?? Mine came with a rubber mat with radial ribs on it, with the words Linn Products sanded off…

I don’t recognise the headshell. My ADC of similar vintage is solid, not pierced.

I believe this would be the correct headshell for the R200 arm with the R100 cartridge.

Agreed. Thats the one I recognise…

Yes, I wasn’t convinced it was an ADC…

This… is an ADC…

Remember swapping my original head shell on the Planar 3 for the ADC. There were a few alternatives knocking around but the ADC seemed to be most popular. I think almost everyone did that in those days. Then the arm was swapped for an RB 250. (Well, the Moth version). That transformed the deck into another level. Happy days!

The black plinth version is fitted with a Klyde, the second of two I had.

I was never affluent enough to afford the top Linn cartridge (& also felt that the rest of my system would not show a more expensive cartridge at its best) & actually liked the Klyde. I think I was in a minority with this view.

I do have to say that I have been delighted with the Krystal.

The 1982 version of my LP12 sports a Zenn MC cartridge (which I still have in its original box). I could not afford an Asak at the time & the Zenn was about half the price (do I recall £99 against an Asak at £207?) & had the benefit of both looking like an Asak &, more importantly, sounding pretty close to one as I recall.

Oddly enough, whilst preferring my smoked lid, I do have a preference for the non-fluted plinth. Having said that, I could happily live with the original style plinth.

Looking at the shots of my black plinth against the walnut one, I can’t really see what I saw in the black one in the first place.

Both my previous plinths were in mint condition &, knowing I would not use either again, I gave them to my dealer in 2019. I would like to think that two other Sondek owners may be enjoying them now.

Thanks for the reply. I’m just trying to see where the krystal sits between the klyde and akiva. May ask my dealer if he can fit an Ekos2 arm with one so I can demo it. Let’s see. He did say if I went for kandid then it made sense to at least do kore and karousel.
Don’t get me wrong I think the new plinthes look great, just that I would st least like to keep part of the original deck.

I’d say the Karousel is the most necessary upgrade before anything else. :+1:t2:

This is the Triggers Broom Problem. After a few upgrades, there may be almost nothing left of ‘your’ LP12…

In my case, I have an original Fluted Plinth with its Top Plate. I think I am on my 3rd sub-chassis…? Certainly 2nd Inner Platter - but original Outer. Maybe 3rd Armboard…? Both sub-chassis and Arm Board could go, if/when I get a Kore…

But its still ‘my’ LP12…

Exactly all that’s left of mine is the dust cover, outer platter and plinth

Top plate and outer platter of mine.

But every bit on it is infused with the original DNA, and carries my memories of bringing it home and loving it.

Original fluted plinth and smoke lid are boxed in the loft. The inner platter is now an ashtray!

I forgot my original Smoked Dust Cover…

So glad Fluted Plinths are a thing again…! My whole LP12 was only £340, in 1981…

And I had to do some desperate scraping and scrimping to afford mine in 1983!

Once I’d heard the LP12, no way was I not buying one, even tho I briefly (2weeks) took home a Thorens.
