A gently used smoked lid arrived.
Now my LP12 is complete!
That’s my beef with LP12s. They’re never complete.
This one is. Only thing changing in future (barring an upgrade of Karousel proportions) is when the Kandid is on its last gasp.
That is a beauty.
That’s ridiculous. Of course they are - whenever the owner decides it’s ‘complete’. Would you say the same thing about Naim products? How about a NAC282 - is that ‘complete’ when it’s powered from a suitable power amp? Or one HiCap? Or two? Or is it only ‘complete’ when it’s powered by a SuperCap? The NAC282, like the LP12, offers an easy upgrade path, but at each stage in that path it is ‘complete’ until the owner decides to take it a step higher.
Journey completed to Klimax + spec after buying it 40 years ago.
Now Klimax Radikal 2/Ekstatik/ Karousel/ Keel/Ekos SE/ Trampolin2/ TA Karmen/ SimPlinth
Phew!
Thanks @bruss!
My original smoked lid is scratched to bits (can’t throw it away tho so it’s boxed up) and I underestimated the effect of having a better condition one - with the new fluted plinth (same as the lid, the original fluted is boxed up) it really makes the deck, in my eyes.
Thank you. Yes, it’s a Ekos SE. The plinth is a SimPlinth in high gloss Indian rosewood from Simon Price.
Cheers! Just waiting for the arrival of my Radikal2 upgrade kit and my Journey (besides cartridges) will be done as well! Kradikal/Karousel/Keel/Tramp2/Simplinth/TA Karmen/PU7
Hi Davide,
Back in its box waiting for a new cartridge (and perhaps some other new and used bits) when self-isolation lets me take it to my local dealer. I tried an old Troika on it and the deck is fine, but the Troika really needs a rebuild at Goldring.
I still have a vintage LP12 with an Ittok, recapped Valhalla, new motor and new springs to keep me happy for the moment.
On reflection, Clive, I must admit you’re right. I did not mean to disparage LP12s. I heard one playing at Bristol Hifi a year or 2 back and with Naim amps and Kudos speakers, the sound was fabulous. Some of the Rega decks just seem a bit less “hands on”.
@TheKevster
What wood is that? I’ve not seen that grain in an original fluted plinth before…classy.
@steviebee It’s afromosia Steve, rather faded after almost 35 years. I don’t think anyone offers afro plinths any more as it is an endangered species (it only grows in the Democratic Republic of Congo, I believe)…
Wow…my Afro looks nothing like yours.
I’ll have to get it out and take a pic.
I’m even wondering if my old flute isn’t Afromosia at all, looking at yours (which looks lovely BTW.)
You could probably get some rubbing compound or liquid sand paper and buff the scratches out.
Yes…something like Displex. Seems to work very well on phone screens. I have only a little, but it has worked a charm on tidying up the new lid.
Would be interesting to see its effect on my original smoked lid.
They always used to recommend Brasso. I assume you can still get it. As used on Spitfire windscreens allegedly.
