After a long day of listening (still going strong) I am staggered at how good the Avid Nexus is. It will be replacing the SME and I have just done a deal with Mike at StudioAV
Cheers for coming back about it, and that sounds like praise indeed! I saw an Avid deck or two at Analogue Seduction a while back, they do look very nicely made. Reading up a bit about the Nexus tonearm it sounds like a nice mix of precision engineering and an interesting bias solution. Thanks for sharing your photos of it 8)
Had a Alphason Sonata some years back with atlas PS, sold it and regretted it until buying a Thorens TD 1600 recently. The belt was a pain but the two motor approach is a good idea.
Is the Thorens TD1600 a development of turntables of former years.?
I had a Thorens TD150S in my University days, and loved it despite the less-than-ideal tonearm that I had installed - an Infinity Black Widow, which had a graphite armwand. It looked great, but it was a subpar performer.
There is a review and description of the TD1601, a semi automatic variant of the TD1600 in the December 2020 edition of Hifi News. It includes the following “…the evergreen TD160 has been brought bang up-to-date in the form of the fully manual £2500 TD 1600 and semi-automatic £3000 TD 1601…”
I’ve looked at photographs of this new Thorens deck online. It looks good. The new in-house tonearm looks interesting - I wonder how it performs. Interesting that the TT has an external power supply. Some electronic genius may be able to substitute or adapt an Armageddon.
It’s not clear if the ‘package’ includes a cartridge, or whether buyers are free to choose their own. There ought to be a tie up with Ortofon.
Thorens must be responsible for getting so many people started on LPs.
I am one very happy owner of the Thorens TD 1600, it does everything I could of hope for. Only had it a little while but am very impressed so far, doesn’t come with a cartridge but does have a power supply included. Its a total redesign rather than a upgrade, since Thorens was taken over a couple of years ago the whole range has been updated. I never had a chance to do a A/B comparison against the Linn which I was also considering, but reviews have been very favourable and surprising compared to a LP12. A great music player not a interrogation machine but the detail is still all there.
Pleased to hear that Thorens are still producing good turntables. As I said above, I have happy memories of the old TD160S.
Yep, seen some old 160’s done up with new plinths, look fantastic.
Talking about retro Turntables I’ve noticed the Garrard have been reinvented and have a reissue.
Makes the LP12 look like a bargain.!
Here’s my upgraded monkfish set up. I’ve just had my 1980’s Rega Planar 3 upgraded with a new 12v motor and Neo power supply with an Exact cart and Rega phono stage that I had added earlier. Running it through the 552/300 DR setup. Sounding rather better than it should in fact, some of it is even sounding better than the digital through the NDX2/555PS - something of a revelation.
I’m now enjoying festering through my 80’s vinyl and finding some right gems in perfect condition.
Quick question, what do folks do for dust control?
They sell Rega and buy Sondek LP12
As it happens, a mate might be selling his LP12
I believe that our esteemed Mr Dane has a totally rebuilt Garrard turntable, but perhaps the later 401. Built like the proverbial brick outhouse.
And with an ARO onboard?
I don’t remember the cartridge.
I have an LP12, with the lid always down, even when playing LPs.
Before each record side, I clean the record, using a Decca (well, Telefunken) carbon fibre brush as the LP is rotating. They are still available to buy new, and thoroughly recommended.
Simple, but very effective.
Oh dear - slippery slope
Be careful Mike. You’ll find that you have 2000 albums on CD or a NAS and 50 LPs and end up spending 80% of listening time on your LPs.
You really want to get a SuperLine and SCDR for that RP3
