Not sure if I’ve posted back here since my Troika got totalled and I fitted the Krystal…
Like the Krystal ?
“the PX can power both units at together” nice:…that should happen more often! Are you happy with the Canalot? I imagine the 252 feeds it via phonos…?
Yes, very much so. I use to run it off the NDX2, but now off the 552 with a custom made DIN to RCA tape out lead - this is much better.
That takes me back! My first serious turntable (bought with earnings from various holiday jobs before I started my undergraduate years at Oxford) was a Thorens TD160S. It had a Mission 773 tonearm and an Ortofon MC 20 (?) cartridge.
I may have misremembered the Ortofon model number. I really thought that it was wonderful, and - even in retrospect - it was pretty damn good.
I reasoned to myself that the LP12 looked so similar in design that it couldn’t have much better sound quality.
I went to see Howard Popeck of Subjective Audio in Camden High Street, when I started work in London a few years later. He showed me that the Linn was indeed a big step up in SQ, and I still have the outer platter (but I don’t think much or anything else) of the LP12 that I bought from him 30-odd years later.
Oh dear, the Troika being “totalled” sounds painful, and will have hit you in the wallet too!
Thanks; sorry, I missed that you have been elevated to Gold class with a 552! Nice.
Some LP12 's are like Trigger’s Broom ,the handles been replaced ,the head has ben replaced but it’s still Trigger’s Broom …
best wishes
Ian
It’s like they say, “Look after your broom…”
Luckily it was an insurance job but it still stung - the Krystal probably sounds a bit better overall not least being new - but there was something about the Troika, maybe just how it looked to be fair.
Yeah it’s ok - it’s not as organic sounding as the Troika and no where near as detailed as the Apheta (3) on my P8 but overall it’s a decent cart for the money. I think it would suit a newer LP12 than mine better - one with all the bearing and subchassis upgrades. This was an direct insurance replacement but I think if I was paying for it for similar money a karousel + Hana ML would have been my choice…
Couldn’t agree more. The Troika was a beautiful design, with its bright red paint job, and the enclosed ‘shell’ design.
I would buy one tomorrow for my ‘unused’ (as new) ARO armtube which would use the third hole on the headshell for the first time ever, but I have never been able to find a ‘donor’ to send for refurbishment.
Nice to read you thoughts on the Troika
Agreed. My own findings is that Krystal …
Maybe slightly different presentation too. As you suggest.
But, then consider pricing?
The cost of a Goldring rebuilt Troika is around half the cost of a new Krystal. (In the UK).
So, that idea need to be factored in too.
A comparison with other cartridges around £600-800 is maybe a fairer comparison. Such as Hana SL/SH or the Dyna 20X2. In this regard, IMHO, think the Troika is an outstanding cartridge.
And aesthetics… It’s probably the most attractive cartridge design, (ever).

Isn’t there something similar with “my grandfather’s axe”?
The insurance company wouldn’t let me keep or even buy back the troika or that’s what I would have done to be honest it seemed like such a waste to write it off, but there isn’t any where to get the work done in this part of the world so they just wanted to replace it new for old - they actually replaced it with a a Kendo which I thought was complete wasted on my deck which is mid spec at best…
Yes agree KiwiMarra
I had the Krystal for a while after my troika went belly up on the ARO but found it a little rough around the edges so to speak
Upgraded to the Linn Kandid which for me is rather special and so it should be for the price
Isn’t it all a variation on the Ship of Theseus hypothesis?
Those who have had their Troika’s refurbed, or other out-of-production styli - does the refurbished one still have the same or very similar sound of an original? Always wondered…
Don’t let the Linn police see those bolts attaching the armboard…
