Thanks for the mention of the Michel Focus One: I had one for some time, replacing the Hydraulic Reference that I had for longer (in fact my second turntable when I became serious about sound), but both now long since traded over for my current Alphason Sonata Gold…

Very nice Soundguy. I’m a big fan of the Thorens TD150 and have refurbed a couple for family members. Yours looks really good - I think we need some close ups though!

That´s a good looker and really a fine sounding turntable. Congratulation.

I once had one of his relatives - an Audio Linear 4000, so to speak. On the continent, after the bankruptcy of Transcriptors e.g. also sold under Cadberg CD-9 and they were available with a small variety of platters.

Very nice. How did you get such a high shine on the top plate?

I wish I could claim that it was all my own work but alas no. All of the parts were bought in from specialist makers as my fabrication skills are not up to the job. I simply did the shopping and assembly! I must admit however I’m rather pleased with how it turned out. The top plate was from a guy on a well known auction site who specialises in top plates for Thorens with a range of different finishes.

Depending on how much the surface has been affected, I did proceed differently. When facing heavy oxidation I did always start with rubbing the surface with lemon slices - not joking.

Grinding and polishing paste can then be used for further pretreatment. Polishing I´ve done with different kinds of polishing pastes. Good experiences I´ve made with Autosol, only bettered with Metarex.

This is a soaked cotton wool, quite similar in handling as it is with NevrDull. Metarex is used for polishing wind instruments and is much faster and stronger than NevrDull. Simply apply, rub vigorously until the soaked cotton turns completely dark. Afterwards only polish with a dry cotton cloth until you get the shine you want.

At the end I rub the surface with Balistol and polish it off again, what makes the shine lasts for a longer period.

Have you tried something other than what looks to be cork on the top of the platter?

Reason I ask is that when I tried cork on my LP12 (and my TD160S before that), it deadened the sound.

Cork mats seems to work fine on some TTs and not on others.

@soundguy The TD 150 was the first ever deck I had and loved it…then I went down to Tottenham Court Road and was seduced by a Technics Direct Drive TT that looked sexy but sounded rubbish.
Hd that for 5 years until I could not stand it any longer an bought my current TT in 1985…and LP12.

I tried the original Thorens mat which seemed bright and imprecise and a neoprene mat which sounded dull. The cork seems to work well with my system as the sum of the parts seem to come together. The turntable and cartridge are bright, the amps seem fairly neutral and the speakers some might regard as a little light in the treble. The result to my ears is a well balanced system which I can listen to for hours.

That is absolutely beautiful looking deck. I hope the cork mat doesn’t affect the sound in any way, because it goes really well with the immaculately turned out plinth. Bravo - and happy listening.
