You’ll love the 606s for sure, but they will need a while to run in. I’d give them at least a couple of months before upgrading the amps. SN3 can drive them (I’ve tried it as I have one), but they really love the NAP 300.
You can get a lot out of the speakers using passive amps, but it sounds like you need to scratch the active itch so good luck finding your snaxo!
I heard this active set up at the Bristol show too. Although it may have been with the Titan 505s rather than the 606s. I thought it was among the best if not the best sounding system there.
I have a vague recollection that @Cymbiosis might have bought up Naim’s remaining stock of SNAXOs. Not 100% certain of that, but if I’m right they are likely the only chance of getting hold of one.
Yes, I did, along with other very desirable items like Hi-Caps and Supercaps.
All sold out now, but quite recently we did have a secondhand 242 that came in trade in so there’s always a chance we may see more examples of this fantastic crossover
I hope I don’t regret this, I have just received a message for a brand new unopened SNAXO 242 (T606) and turned it down, having listened to the comments here recommending to upgrade source and amplifier before going active.
I think that’s probably the right decision. Active systems are notorious for exposing the weakness of the source so it’s the right priority. Obviously that depends on whether you can find another SNAXO, but if you’re patient I’m sure one will turn up.
Having heard a Kudos demo using the Exposure crossover, it did sound very good, so I’m sure that would be a viable option too if you can’t find a SNAXO.
You could always buy it and do your original plan, in the knowledge that you’ll need to invest further in order to optimise things. I guess it depends on how many of these Snaxos are kicking around, and how much you are willing to spend in future.
The SNAXO 242 seems to be as ‘rare as hen’s teeth’ so, depending on the price, I would have secured it if I was in your position. There are none listed, at least in UK and Europe, on a well known web-crawler listings site that locates online listings on eBay, audiomarkt, and forums.
There a couple of s/h Exposure VXN’s out there for around £1,900.
Been using 606s for several years if new they will require a far amount of running in.
When I went into my dealer to order my 606s by coincidence the local Naim rep was in the shop and we had a general discussion regarding Naim and Kudos pairing his advice was the general preference was for passive with a bigger power amp than active with smaller power amps but to ensure that the source and pre amp is capable with either set up.
But the active V passive is an old debate. If you go back far enough to when naim amps didn’t really have the power to drive big speakers, then active is certainly a good way to do it. But step forward to more modern power amps, speakers with better designed crossovers and the difference is very small.
As do it these days in a room and you will get a very mixed response, some will, and just as many won’t. But if you already have most of the stuff to go active, it’s probably the way to do it. But if you have got to go buy an extra amp, then all the extra stuff to go active, then really you are better off just getting a much better amp in the first place. It will certainly be a lot less hassle, cheaper over the year, plus look a lot nicer than all them boxes.
Don’t overlook trying Kudos KS-1 speaker cables which, as you would expect, work very well with Kudos speakers; often better than more expensive speaker cables. The Titans have their internal wiring done with KS-1.
