Snooker

You know winter is approaching when snooker is back on terrestrial tv.

An old timer, snooker wise, was dashing around Stroud market this morning. Services not required as a pundit. The talk so far is on cues, titanium ferrules, and rare ash, etc.

As a longtime pool billiard player the abilities shown at those huge tables never ceases to amaze me. Once or twice a year we stray away from 9 ball and humble ourselves at snooker. Although there is a (printed) signature of John Higgins on my cue, my playing is miles away from his.

It will be interesting to see how the three 50ish players Higgins, Williams and O’Sullivan fare this time around.

Imagine in 10 years a retired O’Sullivan doing his pidgin commentry on the telly.

You should worry.

My cue is emblazoned with Alex Higgins signature!

Haven’t played for many years & only played regularly, at the Canary Cue club, when I lived in Norwich from 1979 to 1983.

My finest moment on the green baize was a 7 ball break of 31. All these years later I still can’t believe how easy it looks on TV. Still, I am convinced the pockets are much, much larger nowadays……….

Yes, …and which two of them will get to the final, and which one will win!

I recall my snooker hero, Steve Davis, saying that as the years past, his fitness & eyesight remained but he simply lost the will to put in the practice hours.

I believe that Hendry said much the same.

So perhaps, post 50, most of the ability remains & a degree of success depends on motivation?

I tend to agree especially when you have won as many tournaments as the three of them have it must be very difficult to maintain the motivation and required practice levels

Kyren Wilson looks out of sorts tonight
Maybe ill perhaps?

Commentator thinks he’s unhappy using his spare cue, apparently his regular cue was damaged at the repairers.

He’s playing Elliot Slessor tonight, and Kyren is currently down 2 (11) 4
(at this moment in time)

Reflecting on Ronnie’s loss: aside from the cliches, he did not adapt to the pace of the cloth well. Some of his breaks were what one has come to expect. I hope it’s not the last we have seen of him.
