Well as stated above all you need is insurance to drive it to an MOT centre, I would take out insurance (make sure you can cancel it in 7 days or whatever and get your money back), book it in for an MOT which will cost you 40-50 quid and go that route. You will then know how bad the car is and what needs to be down rather than guessing and for not a huge outlay. If the car is not too bad it should be a free retest as well. All just my opinion.

Being an MOT tester myself we get asked this question a lot.
As long as it is booked in to a test centre locally and insured then fine to drive there with no tax.
It must be test station as close to home as possible unlike the customer who thought it would be fine driving from Liverpool to Ramsgate just because it was booked in with us.
