Speaker Advise needed

Hi all,

While i am enjoying my nova playing on my self build speakers, i am affraid that the upgraditis is not done with me yet. And quite frankly, i blame you lot for it. With threads like “if you like deep bass” and the likes.

But on a more serious level, i build these speakers some 20 ish years ago, it is a closed two way system with (at that time) top of the line Scan Speak units. Especially the tweeter got me gobsmacked at that time, and to date performs wonderfully (ringradiator).

Some ten years ago, my mini me, got curious and pushed in the dustcap of the woofers, but my anger and tears were the only real consequence. And after a refurbishment of one of the passive radiators, i really continue to enjoy them.

Now the thing is that at this moment, my systems plays in a rather small section of the room (appr 3,5 * 3 mtrs, with a ceiling height of 2,6 mtrs). And in this section it still brings tears to my eyes. But with some time we will be moving house, to an open plan living room/kitchen with a significant bigger volume (min 13,1*5,7 mtrs with a hight varying from 5,7 mtrs down to 2,7 mtrs).

Yet allthough i love the way my current (rather low eff. of app. 84db/m) speakers play, i fear that they might not sufice for the new place. Now i am wandering accros all sorts of second hand sites and i am leaning towards and “old” love, the transmission line speaker. Does any of you have experience on the matching of Naim with (for Example) T+A speakers?

There is a set of pre-owned T+A Criterion TCI 2E speakers. Somewhat of a behemoth and not quite sure if the Nova will do them justice. Just having some doubts on a electrostatic tweeter, wether i will like that yes or no. With a dealer, you can go and listen for hours without consequence. With a private seller not so much.

Has anyone heard these speakers play in a combination with Naim?

I wouldn’t do anything before trying the system as is at the new place. You may or may not need to change anything and it might be the Nova not up to the job in a larger space, not your speakers at all, depending also on how you set up the listening space etc.?

We recently moved our main system to a new, larger listening space (and with higher ceilings too) and I had similar doubts as to how it might play out. Turned out it’s just as good or better (with a pair of standmount speakers).

Thanks for your reply, so i should just ignore the itch… pretty sure the missus will be willing to help me with that…

Regarding wether or not the Nova is up to the job, I have played a Atom HE combined with a NC NAP250 on my speakers in comparison with the Nova. And allthough it adds in the staging, it does not improve the reproduction on the lower frequencies or “soundpressure”.

Oh resist that itch for now. Wait until you try them in your new house. Maybe you can continue to enjoy the satisfaction of using your own personally built speakers.

I would hold off until you get into your new house. Scanspeak revelators are great. I built a pair of sealed 2.5 way about 15 years ago. They are a very smooth detailed sound that compliments Naim very well. It is hard to beat the revelator midrange and treble. I have them in a large room of about 5.5m x 11m. I just built the matching 13” revelator sub’s last fall and it sounds very good now. My speakers roll off sharply at 50hz so they integrate seamlessly with the subs which are crossed over at 60hz.
I have only compared my homemade speakers with my PMC Twenty5 24i and Totem Hawks. I bought the PMC thinking that they would be a good upgrade but I think my homemade speakers have better midrange. Don”t get me wrong, I love my PMC’s and if you don’t want subs then PMC would be my choice. You might find that you have to spend a lot of money to do better then your homemade speakers.

You’re right to blame ‘this lot’ for upgraditis . I ordered a nait 50 on fleabay the other day. No idea what to do with it and I’ve nothing to connect to it. I only stream and I’m more than happy with my Atom, Muso and Muso qb.:joy:  :man_shrugging:
