I guess my target audience with this question will be few, but I’d be very interested to hear from owners of 500/Wilson speakers which speaker cables you’d suggest I try. I have Mogami 2972 and Kudos KS-1 currently, preferring the Kudos for its clarity, but wondering if it might be favouring the upper mids and highs over the rest of the frequency range. Things can get a bit bright with some recordings. The Mogami is more even, but a bit ‘opaque’ sounding.
I don’t want to spend a fortune on cabling, but at the same time don’t want to spoil the ship..
@KJC Wilson Audio uses Transparent, but I am not sure these would be a good match for your Naim amp. Perhaps others who have tried Transparent can comment.
I have a Transparant interconnect between my Naim amps. Liked it better than the Chord alternative. But in the end it is a matter of synergy within the whole chain.
There is a huge gulf in price between your cables( i use Kudos on my nap500) and better cables. I found it very difficult trying very expensive cables that did not really move the needle, before settling on the Kudos. Subsequently my dealer (Signals) now stocks Audiomica……they sound really good at their price points. Not done a home demo, not sure i am up to it after the last bout of testing, wish you luck. I came to the conclusion the room interaction was playing more of a part than i had imagined, the brighter sound of ks-1 made was helping, for me.
For the price, you can’t beat the Kudos, they’re not perfect and yes, they do accentuate the treble nd upper mids but IMO you can’t beat them unless you want to spend a fortune.
Thanks to all for your replies. I know Wilson likes Transparent, but I don’t know if Naim approve. I could ask Naim support I guess.
Super Lumina would give me a full SL loom which might give some synergy advantage to the whole system. I tried them before with my Shahinians, they didn’t do it for me then, but Shahinians are a very different breed, so happy to try again now.
The Wilson dealer doesn’t rate Chord with Wilsons and thinks they’ll exacerbate brightness. His top pick is Atlas Cables. I don’t know them, but happy to investigate.
I have experience with Atlas, albeit with their interconnects. I suspect the reason why your dealer recommended them is that Atlas uses OCC (ohno Continuous Cast) copper (and silver in their reference Asimi range) for their cables. In my experience I find OCC copper to provide a natural, fatigue-free sound and is now my preference when looking at cables. Indeed I have been moving over to Shunyata cables because they too prefer OCC.
I would bet something like Atlas Mavros would sound excellent in your system but it’s not cheap by any means. Try to source it second-hand or at a healthy dealer discount.
FYI, I’ve had Sabrina Xs with Transparent ‘speaker cables and amp I/Cs (IIRC) in my room, and they didn’t rock my boat. If anything, they dulled the PRAT. I would try the S/Lumina.
I have Superlumina with 500DR/ Alexx V… I am happy with the musicality and Prat.
However I have never compared to other speaker cables. I used Superlumina since the beginning from Wilson Sasha to Sasha DAW and now Alexx V. I am happy.
Thanks @JTheKop very directly relevant experience and extremely helpful!
My Wilson dealer spoke to his Naim rep yesterday and sadly Naim don’t have a demo set of SL to lend out. I will have to try sourcing a loan set from elsewhere.
Good new deal KJC although I’ve recently bought lots of SL (2 x 5/5 2 x pairs DIN/XLR and 1 pair of 7m speaker cables) second hand costing around 40% retail . Used prices are pretty low right now.
