OK, outcome reached.

I took my borrowed speakers and stands (Norstone) back to the store and ordered the speakers.

I also decided to buy the Norstone stands.

You all gave good solutions, but by making a small cut in the carpet/underlay (don’t tell the wife) I think the spikes will make a proper connection with the floorboards - and will then be completely rigid.

I also like the look of them and they are great value. What they look like is not as important as sound, but I do have to look at them, and I could not bring myself to buy the tripods.

I intend to review the sound with alternative cables, interconnects and power leads in say six months, I might even audition some new stands then.

Thanks for all your help

Another vote for Custom Designs… I procured a set for a friend who bought Lounge 2’s this past winter and they are very nice. Made specifically for the Lounge 2. Come in tri-column or 4-column, and are the correct height for the speakers, etc.

Which Customs Designs model are you referring to?

What I like about the Solidsteel stands is that you can use different speakers.

Do you place your speakers directly on the top shelf?

Yes, the Solidsteel SS6 are universal stands. I placed the speakers directly on top of the base plate. I don’t use Bluetrac or any additional damping elements. I think this is the best way to make the most of the stands’ design. Vibrations are best absorbed via the base plate, the balls, the sand-filled legs and the spikes (or Isoacoustics Gaia).

Eventhough I really like my SS6 stands imho only small speakers look good on ‘em. Many ‘bookshelf’ speakers are too big, (too wide and deep) making the combo look very odd. (too say the least)

I’m using 4 of these very small self-adhesive rubbery pads so the speakers won’t slide of the topplate easily.

For speakers that have a deep cabinet (>25cm/10”) I’d probably go for somelike like the Dynaudio Stands-10

OR the B&W STAV24

I agree about the very narrow top plate; the Oephi speakers I have are large (particularly deep) and IMHO they look silly on the SS6 stands.

I bought the Norstone stands, which have a bigger top plate (and you can buy even larger top plates if you wish - maybe you can with SS6 too - but they’d still look silly IMHO), which hold the speakers very securely.

There is still a tiny bit of ‘wobble’, but I will be making a small cut in the carpet/underlay so the spikes make a good connection with the floorboards, which should improve things.

However, I am going to try granite slabs (£3 each) first to see if that helps.

The Norstone stands are £130 versus £514 for SS6, so not the end of the world if I move them on.

I know that the SS6 stands are very well made in Italy, but I wonder how much of that cost is in the transport and duties (the dealer said the duties were quite high).

Anyway, I am very happy with what I have and everyone should make their own mind up - and use their ears!

All the best,
Tony

Hi Tony,

I think the granite slabs will help to make your stands stand more stable!
(used some myself for years in the past, for that same reason)

The nice thing about the SS6 stands being tripods is that they’ll always stand stable and are easier to get level. (they’re a pain in the (beep) to fill the legs though, but that’s an option, not mandatory)

Solidsteel do offer 2 topplates, the standard 16 x 16cm and optional a 19 x 19cm topplate can be ordered, although I don’t see the point as a larger (and especially deeper) speaker would still look pretty horrible on the SS6 stands.

100% agree.

Anyway, I am happy, so that’s ok. Each to their own choice :nerd_face:

Thx

I initially meant ‘universal’ as the opposite of ‘dedicated’ stands, which are designed specifically for a particular loudspeaker. For larger loudspeakers, Solidsteel offers an optional larger top plate (19x19 cm). Whether they look good with the respective loudspeakers is a matter of taste. I also find the SS6 quite good value for money, given that dedicated stands for many speaker models (e.g. Graham, Marten) cost around £1,000. The SS6 are very well made and sturdy compared to the Quadraspire stands I had previously.
