Stax - Electrostatic Headphones and Energisers

I once took them on the tube with 6 C cells in the energiser fronted by a Walkman Pro. It wasn’t very successful, they’re clearly audible to other passengers, so I felt really antisocial and put them away.

I’ve taken the plunge and ordered some - delivery mid October (we will see about that!) so it’s all about the energiser now…

Blue Hawaii SE Is currently the fave…

Congratulations Matt - I ordered mine yesterday from Justin at HeadAmp (maker of the BHSE).

Funny how things work. A Japanese resident who works in Hong Kong just listed his new old stock Stax 007 MK1 headphone. This is the first version of a legendary headphone and is considered to be the best example. He is selling off some toys to fund his SR-X9000. I simply could not refuse this opportunity :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

You have a detailed review of it in Mono and stereo. Could be interesting for you. ( New Stax SRX 900 flagship headphones)

Ah - interesting! …I can see a rehash of the press release - but not a review - if you have a link for one I’d be super interested!

Tap on google the title I wrote above ( New Stax ……headphones, Mono and Stereo review). You will find it directly.
The link would break the rules.

Here an extract:

A diaphragm that is 20% larger than the previous flagship

Uses a diaphragm made of ultra-thin super engineering plastic film. By reducing the mass as close to zero as possible, excellent transient characteristics have been achieved, and sound follow ability has been improved from low to high frequencies. The diaphragm area has succeeded in increasing the diameter by 20% compared to SR-009S and has acquired a vast sound field that breaks the limits of headphone listening.

MACHINED ALUMINUM HOUSING THAT ELIMINATES UNNECESSARY RESONANCE

The main body that houses the sounding unit uses a tough machined aluminum housing. Adopted a new design that firmly fixes the sounding unit and thoroughly eliminates unnecessary resonance of the housing itself. The flow of sound waves from the sounding unit has been made smoother, and the acoustic characteristics inside the housing have been improved.

MESH

In the past, the circular metal mesh mounted on the SR-X was one of the ideal designs as an electrode that reduces the effects of air resistance and reflection and enhances sound transmission.

However, if the size and thinness of the metal mesh electrode are pursued sound quality, the strength will be insufficient and resonance will cause the reproduced sound to become muddy, so there was a big hurdle to install it in the product. The SR-Ω, which was developed again in the 1990s as a product equipped with a metal mesh, aimed to increase the size of the metal mesh, so at the same time, it was necessary to perform high-precision work of reinforcing the mesh surface with delicate manual work using an adhesive. Requested. For this reason, the manufacture of SR-Ω metal mesh electrodes was extremely difficult, and stable mass production was not possible. This is the reason why only a small amount of SR-Ω was released to the world while achieving excellent sound quality.

Wow indeed! have hears Stax’s at Hi Fi shows and yes they ARE among the very best
if a tad over priced My ‘Phones have all been of the Focal brand starting with the original Clear then up grading to the Stellia’s then back to the new Clear MG which have a much nicer finish then the Stellia’ s and give the a hard time in sound

Correct - that review linked above is dribble - simply a copy and paste of the official press release.

There is a great video on Youtube which was just released. It is an interview and presentation with the Stax PR and production engineer. The video has subtitles. There are interesting shots inside the Stax Museum contained within the factory. Very cool.

Google Fujiya Avic Stax New Flagship SR-X9000. It is a 16 minute video.

Stax has been very smart. They just cut Audeze’s legs from out underneath them with this stealth and unexpected announcement coming just weeks after Audeze’s first entry into the electrostatic world. My faith is unwavering with Stax as they introduced their first ear speaker in 1960 - 61 years ago. A true heritage brand like Salisbury Green. They certainly stepped up to the plate and this new introduction seems to have surprised many with its technical prowess and advancements.

It’s exactly that heritage that is the appeal. Like Macintosh, Linn, Naim, Revox - some things are forever, and are better for it (despite the odd bankruptcy along the way!)

It does seem like it was kept very quiet - the engineers have clearly used their time well over COVID, feel like they have delivered some real innovation and the promise of a step change in already sublime sound quality.

Sorry, but I just seen the technical details on the Stax site. The Mono and Stereo, not really a review I agree, gives however much more details and insights. At least I think.

My 700s have replaced my Lambda Pro’s (gradually degraded over time) to good effect. Still using my SRMT1. Still enjoy hugely and keeps family happy.
