Can a subwoofer be used easily with this classic gear? And how does it get connected?
Thanks! So sub needs a high-level input and it will work.
Just check, some subs (generally the cheaper models) donât take Hi level input. Youâll be fine with REL for example. They supply the simple wires too.

Hallo, I have 160, 82, Scap, Kan. Could I add a sub woofer too, and how? Thank
Best to use a high level connection from the loudspeakers, although you will have to consider how best to make the connection.
Low level to a spare DIN output on the preamp power supply is another option. If the cable is longer than a couple of metres you may need a special slugged cable for this.
Thanks
I do have a spare DIN out on preamp. But I donât get a couple of things here
- Whatâs low and high level connections? What that means and how I measure that? 2. If the cable is longer than 2 meters, couldnât I just cut it? 3. What a slugged cable looks like? Thanks
The search function will be a help to you if you use it, lots to be found here covering the use and connection of subs.

If you are going to get a REL give them a call, they will advise which model of sub and the best way to connect. Mine, for example, is a low level connection from a supercap, which REL recommended following a conversation with Naim. BTW the dealer did not know âŚ
I too get confused by high and low level connections - itâs the terminology.
Hi, the low level connection is taken from the preamp, or the high level connection from the power amp.
The quirkiness of Naim designs means that itâs a little more complicated than that: the preamp output is actually on the preamp power supply rather than on the preamp itself.
The high level connection can upset the stability of a Naim power amp, so itâs best to make the connection from the loudspeaker input terminals rather than the power amp output sockets. (There are special cables that allow you to connect to the power amp if you prefer.)
If you use a low level connection, Naim preamps do not like long cables. A âsluggedâ cable is one that has been modified by adding a resistor inside the DIN socket to avoid upsetting the preamp.
Amplifiers are high current, thatâs why theyâre loud
Preamps are low current, thatâs why they need an amplifier.
Well, thank you again, there!!! It seems nothing is simple!.
If (IF) I do understand correctly, best way (easier and less at risk of messing something), would be to connect the sub to Kans. Question is, which one? Left or right? Or both? And how ? I could solder L and R of one speaker to L and R of sub, talking here of connecting sub just to one speaker.
(Somehow I feel I am still missing the core of it)
But thanks anyway for the patience
