Sumo is coming to London

From Wednesday to Sunday a Grand Tournament is being held at the Albert Hall. 40 of the top rikishi are taking part in only the second Grand Tournament to be held outside Japan.

I’ll be there on Friday, but the good news for people who where unable to get a ticket, is it’s on the BBC.

Once you understand what is going on, it’s fantastic entertainment.

Great shout. Got today’s action on the big screen at the moment. (in the Maegashira ranks at the moment),

I was a bit disappointed. I’m pretty sure they weren’t putting 100% into that. But I suppose that’s to be expected without promotion or relegation on the line.

Although it got a lot better when the Sanyaku and Yokozuna rikishi where in action in the second half.

Just about to kick off.

And the coverage on the BBC iPlayer has been great, showing all the action from Day 3 and 4 (so far)

I tended to watch it live, after dinner, and yesterday I managed to to watch the whole of the final day.

Yes, I’ve really enjoyed it. Obviously being there on Friday was the highlight, great atmosphere and something that doesn’t come along that often. When I bought the tickets I had no idea all the top Rikishi would be there, so that was a massive bonus.

The strange thing about Sumo, is attracts people who have absolutely no interest in sport. My wife has never been interested in any sport whatsoever, but she loves it. She’s seen every single bout, of every single day, of every tournament for the last 10 years. My daughter is the same, she got into it when she was staying with us during covid, (she was a captive audience). Her and her boyfriend are mad for it, she’s constantly texting me with the latest sumo news.

Can’t wait for 2031.

The coverage was excellent.

I initially found the camera angle a bit strange, but got used to it.

One thing it did do is highlighted the difference in size of the Rikishi. I had no idea Oho was actually bigger than Atamifuji.

One thing that did surprise me was the seeming lack of ranks 2-4 ( ie. Ozeki to Komusubi). Yeah there were the two Yokozunas (who one could see were clearly at that level for a reason!), but it was mainly Maegashira.

Bring back The Wolf and The Dump Truck!! :joy:

I know what you mean, but there seems to be a lack of Sanyaku at the moment.

Only one Ozeki. Kotozakra, and he wasn’t taking part. Presumably injured.

Only two Sekiwake. Wakatakakage and Kirishima, both took part.

Only two Komusubi. Takayasu and Aonishiki, both took part.

Some who where fighting as Maegashira, will probably get promoted to Sanyaku for the November tournament due to their performance in September.

I would certainly put the “Flying Monkey”, Tobizaru, up for promotion!

My only disappointment was that this tournament was for only five days and not the full fifteen!

But loved the photos of the rikishi “enjoying London”. The best pic was the guys doing the iconic shot of “Abbey Road”!

He was Maegashira 15 in the last tournament, so he’s got a long way to go.

I think he got his KachiKoshi in September, so he will move up the Maegashira ranks.

The “Southwick Times” has an article/picture of four rikishi visiting a restaurant in East Dulwich. Great photo opportunity for the restaurant and “sumo”, but my daughter, who lives within a short bus ride, complained that she won’t be able to get a table there for the foreseeable future!

Millennials!!
