Can DR Supercaps be serviced by Naim today?

Check with your dealer. Naim recently reported that they were having to triage service for DR units as they were very short of DR capacitors and were awaiting further supplies.

I have heard back from Naim. In short, and as I suspected, it’s just a temporary measure while Naim work on getting DR capacitor supplies back on track. Yup, mine needs a service too, but holding back until spares have stabilised for service rather than repair.

When should I service my Naim equipment?

According to Naim: “This is a question often asked, and the Naim Service Department recommendations are as follows: for the Chrome bumper (circa 1975 to 1989) and Olive (circa 1989 - 2000) range products, we recommend every 8 - 10 years and for the newer Black products (2000 - present), every 12 - 15 years.” When asked about wear rates, component degradation and servicing on current equipment, Steve Sells commented as follows;

If the Olive Supercap was relatively recently serviced then it likely would have Sic Safco/Felsic main caps fitted, which replaced the previous SLCEs.

Good spot. If the internals are now the same, then what drives the service interval will also be the same.

Thanks. I thought that was about it. Mine are 2018/2019 production. I think the service for my 252/300 will be the next owners’ problem.

Ours would be due service in 2036.

Whether naim will be servicing them at that point is anyone’s guess. One of the selling points of naim was their strong service ethic, but it feels like there have been loads of posts recently where one by one products actually can’t be serviced. Whether due to board design, no spares, component shortage….

I don’t plan to have my 252/300 at the point it needs 12-15 yr service. I found an upgrade I think sounds much better.

The component issue was temporary. I had to wait a few weeks to get the first of my 555DR-PS serviced by Class A but it’s been done and is due back tomorrow. The second one is going in for its service this week.

Boulder 1110 and 1151 monoblocks. I already have the 1108 phono-stage.

Similar cost to 552/500.
