After quite a few demos I have concluded the following;
I prefer soft dome tweeters. Sealed designs have beautiful sound but they all lack the bass I desire. I’ve comlpetely moved away from looking at anything with a rear port design. Whilt I am not against the idea of a subwoofer I am also not a fan of that idea.
My criteria is as follows;
Oak or Walnut finish
Front or bottom ported
Soft dome tweeters
Fun over absolute accuracy
Not bright or extended on the top-end
I am going to buy a pair of Russell K 100 speakers on a 30-day trial. Anyone else tried these with Naim gear?
The other speakers that seem to meet the tick boxes are the ProAc D2 (non ribbon) - but I’ve not managed to have a demo and they look massive!
I can’t remember if this has been mentioned in the thread above but PMC 25.21’s tick your boxes and price range. I use a pair with my Nova and love them
did you find speaker you like?
how was th Russell K 100 ?
i have the same demands you wrote for my SN3
and i want to had that i looking for adding some warmth also
also interesting on towers
They are not, I feared the same thing when I started considering them as a successor to my Tab 10 Sigs, they are now positioned in the same spot where my Tabs used to sit and I do not feel they attract attention with their proportions, but their looks :). And yes, go for the Ribbon, I can see now why Proac use it for their hi end models, yes, it is less bright than the dome. Been there done that.
I got to say, those would look superb in my room. Never heard of these before, nevermind listened to them.
I feel like I am down to two or three pairs now, all of which I have not listened to. These Gurus do intregue me though. The only aspect of the Russell K 100s that could put me off is the reviews saying the midrange is quite forward. I don’t want the mids to take control at the expense of the bass taking a back-seat.
The D2 is in fact only 3cm taller than the K100. But they are also 6cm narrower, which is why they look so much bigger. Volume wise, they are probably smaller.
