Supernait 3 - Bookshelf Speakers 2.5k budget

Difficult one.

The Spendors are more accurate and have a smaller volume/footprint which is a consideration for the future as I want my system to not be too imposing in our new house (plan to move soon and they may sit on a sideboard - sacrilege!!). The price I got for the Gurus was very good and the price I paid for the Spendors was silly (2ndhand but never used £960). The bass that the Gurus produce is incredible and they really do boogie.

I started off 40 years ago with some Rogers LS3/5a speakers and nostalgia has had some hand to play in the purchase of the Spendors. Oh, and they are rather good. Could give your ProAc Tabs a run……

You’ll be amazed, I’ve got two pairs of Q10’s, the Juniors have the same drive units as the mk1 Q10s.

Enjoy!

Got the Juniors here. They sound fantastic, or they would if one of them wasn’t faulty.

They both play well up until what I would call medium to loud levels in a small to medium size room. On certain tracks like Opera by Emmanuel Santarraomama one of the drivers pops/crackles at certain points, it’s almost like I am switching to a vinyl on one speaker breifly. It’s not when the driver is moving the most. It’s more like low-midrange and makes parts of the track sound slappy. The other speaker is very happy at that volume and sounds completely normal. It also sounds superb! Gutted!!

I’m having to return them. I doubt I’ll be lucky enough to find another pair any time soon.

Back to sq.1

Oh well, it got me out of the house for 3 hours…

That’s a real crock.

Happened to me years ago on a quest to revisit missed opportunities and found a Pioneer A400 on an auction site, never owned one but was always curious. Turned up, looked mint but one channel didn’t work and returned it, never went back to scratch that itch.

If you wanted to borrow a pair of Guru’s whilst you continue your search I have a pair of spare QM10 mk2’s. I did see a pair of Juniors on TomTom site very recently btw.

Now you can get some ProAc Tablette 10s.

I wonder if the shop would investigate getting them repaired for you? FOC, new drivers perhaps?

Yes, the shop have been really good. They offered to investigate and repair the fault if possible - but that would leave me without speakers for who knows how long.

It is a very odd problem. Metallica - Nothing else matters plays fine but Lana Del Ray just crackles like mad.

You can still get a new pair of Juniors direct from Guru with 30 day return (if I remember correctly). If you liked what they did it would seem silly not to get another pair and end your search.

I’ve had my hands on those

My friend Jon bought the Guru’s from Badlyread, used daily on the end of a Nait 5i with plenty of punch for such a small speaker, a very enjoyable listen.

Just played some test notes via YouTube. The problem starts at 150Hz through to around 400Hz. If I tap the speaker the noise changes or stops for a second or two.

I can’t see any way of getting into these easily but I’d say something is touching the driver inside perhaps.

That is a very kind offer. Where abouts are you located?

Some great recommendations in the thread I would suggest 2nd hand Kudos S10s, very room friendly.

I’m Watford, St Albans way, genuine offer, I think Gurus are amazing and it’s a real crapper that you nailed some Jnrs and got one duffer.

What happens if you turn the speaker on the side or upside down? Wondering if it’s a wire inside from crossover to driver moving about or something similar, is that even possible?

A good shake might reveal whether something is loose inside. It may be a dead easy fix.

Gurus have left the building. I’m unable to do anything with them other than listen to them at low levels with certain music.

Well, even though that was dissapointing it has given me some ideas about the sound I am looking for. I found the Gurus Juniors very nice - even though I was unable to test them fully due to the fault.

I would say, I’d perhaps like a bit more bass especially at lower levels. Maybe this puts me into the REL 5 territory. When I was testing the Juniors with a frequency sweep I noted that I must have a big spike at around 45Hz as this appeared a lot louder to my ears than the frequencies above 45Hz. With that in mind - maybe something that doesnt go as low at the Juniors so not to amplify my rooms response, but something that hits a bit harder at say 60-80Hz especially at lower listening levels. I couldn’t fault the mid-treble. I would say I wouldn’t find these tiring at higher levels for exteneded periods - so that ticks a box or two.

One speaker the guy I spoke to when collecting the Juniors praised for close-wall placement were the Neat Ministra. Actually, they had a lot of the speakers on my hit-list so once I sort my diary out I could have another drive up there.

Would I pay full price for the Juniors? Probably not, due to them missing something more. They are a great speaker no doubt and on the 2nd hand market a steal. I have a funny feeling for slighlty more I can go up another level plus tick more boxes. They looked cute, maybe too cute. Something that says ‘look at me’ to go with my wooden theme.

Audiovector Q-R1?

Front vented. Good close to a wall. Highly regarded. Whether they float your boat is another matter entirely.

Maybe something like the Graham LS3/5 or Spendor 4/5 fits the bill. Within budget too.

The bass of the Guru Juniors goes lower than Spendor 4/5s.
