Sustaining Naim CDPs - An Appeal

I rotated my 140, post its recent service, for about 6 months, in place of my 250. I have a 72 which can replace my 82, should I wish… I used the 72 to test the idea of E boards with a high output MC cart (a DV10X), before hunting for E boards for my 82.

Hmm, perhaps I should get my CD3.5 down and play it through my Nova too, if for nothing else, to stop it gumming up.

I believe there are a dozen people here with Naim CD issues. Probably another dozen that do not contribute to the forum. Many more that will be unable to sell their Naim players due to inability to repair. This is a major problem for the unfortunate few with no apparent solution.

Mid 90s. Which one is that? CDI?

I think it’s important to not get too overexcited and to regain some perspective on this; there are ways to repair many of the older players, the problem is, it’s now probably at a point that for many players Naim themselves can no longer do so in a reliable way where they can warrant their work due to no longer having the mechanisms. I know there are others outside of the Naim network who will try to keep these players going, probably by scavenging parts from older and lesser players or even adapting parts from what does exist new. Naim can’t do that of course, for obvious reasons. So even though Naim have not been able to replace the mechs on their first and second generation players for 15 or more years now, there are many enthusiasts who are keeping the going and even a broken player is still worth a surprising amount of money on places like eBay and the like, because of this.

IT’S the base ,model, one to go with my Nait 3 and NAT 03 , so my guess is it’s a CD3 .

Was lucky as I found the puck in a drawer minutes beforeI brought it downstairs.

it might help to publish a list of cd players affected at the moment?

Pretty much all - bar the 555 - I believe…?

I’m trying to collate a status in an earlier post on this thread, just trying to find time to do the digging into the various classes of players is a bit tricky

At least as a data point. And I will try and add the uniti players at some point too, sorry to miss those

The context from Richard, and others, been really helpful. I for one apologise if my tone had been off in here, just trying to understand what the options are.

[edit, I have actually looked at the CD5si as a result of all this, still in production after all and I bet it sounds good. I’ve also been enjoying CDs through my CD5 as normal  ]

Yes, believe the 5si uses a Sanyo unit.
Great player, not letting mine go anytime soon.

Excellent comment, Richard. Pretty much what I was thinking too but didn’t want to tread on forum rules. A spot of online research soon reveals that these ‘bricked’ CD players can often be brought back to life, just not via the official channels - for entirely understandable reasons.

So heres a current advert
no mention of the mech problem as often seems to be the case with dealers selling something that may not be repairable…

I got my CD3.5 down from storage and hooked it up via the Nova, and I’m happy to say that it has flawlessly played a couple of CD’s, touch wood!

For something I bought new in 1997 and have never serviced, I have to say I’m more than pleased with its longevity.

Naim CD Players do not come with a SNAIC…

What I thought!
Maybe not that good a dealer!

I’m not sure what your point is here. It’s an ad for a 7 year old CD player. Whoever is selling it is offering 3 months warranty but beyond that, like any secondhand bit of kit, it’s caveat emptor. I’m sure if anyone is interested they will do their homework and make an informed judgement. Failing that, ring the seller/dealer and have a chat.

We seem to be getting in unchartered territory to my mind……with non naim solutions etc and adverts….a slippery slope?

Have I missed something? Since when did a (Naim or otherwise) CDP only 7 years old become a geriatric on its last legs and in imminent risk of heart failure?

Edit/ sorry Richard, wasn’t intended at you!

I’ve allowed it as it’s obviously needed to make some sort of point (not sure what) and isn’t specific on who is selling or where.

As for what you do with a player after the factory cannot offer the kind of support they would like, that’s up to the owner. I’m just saying it’s not a dead end (at least not entirely). I own a CD3 and I know that Naim can’t replace the mech on that when it finally dies. I’ll be left to my own devices (with a bit of help from someone more technically able than I) , hence why I have some spare CDM9s handy. I’m not recommending it, but if you have an attachment to an old player you are left with few other options. But at least there are other options that mean it won’t need to be binned.
