Sustaining Naim CDPs - An Appeal

I’d try ‘under the pillow’… can never go wrong with that :+1:t3: Best Peter

In the light of all this doom and gloom, I just thought I’d check out my 1999 vintage CDX with some Uriah Heep**

Yup … sounds pretty fine :grinning: :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

tomorrow I’ll check the 1999 vintage CD3.5 on my wife’s system!

** “Salisbury” 2016 remastered version. Amusingly, this was a favourite of a school friend in the sixth form - he used to sing it incessantly during chemistry lessons - and as I remember … badly!

Edit: Just coz i could…now playing a dBPoweramp rip of the aforementioned self-same CD through my full-fat Synology NAS + Allo Signature + nDAC/XPS front end into my 82. Well, I’ll be buqqered, but it sounds better!

Which leaves me with a problem…(a) dump the CDX or (b) get it an XPS.

Sorry don’t mean to be.
The grease can be replaced, I have done it on my Cambridge cdp a couple of times.

Please permit me to express my own opinion that that’s not a particularly pleasant or even decent way to treat your buyer, unless (of course) you made him/her aware of the potential problem with the mech.

If you didn’t, you’d better just hope that the buyer doesn’t comes onto this Forum looking for help, only to find you bragging about how clever you’ve been in putting one over him or her.

Shameless, really.

Weirdest post I’ve seen in a while.

I think there is a marked difference between not disclosing a known fault to a buyer and failing to tell them a certain part is/may not be available if repair is later required.

I have 2 cdx5x and love them. I think I’d still feel very guilty though if I tried to sell them privately as it doesn’t seem fair…
I think any naim dealer should disclose the full situation.

If the seller is honest in a sale contract, the buyer has no comeback. That’s quite easy really.

It’s not Naim’s fault that the world has largely moved on from CD with the consequential reduction in available parts and manufacturers.

The good news, though, is that if a 555 player is bricked, preloved players are not expensive (in relative terms). A traded in CD 555 was listed recently by a local NZ reseller for about £3500.

Repair of Naim CD players is dicey, no guarantee that the sourced laser mech is a good one. Not sure how many Naim units were sold, but a few available at various places currently. Resale value is very low due to uncertain status. Very unfortunate for the owners.

Sustaining Naim CDP’s may not be possible in the future, obviously. But…

I live with the hope that where there’s a sufficient demand for something, there will always be a supply.

There are millions and millions of CD users in the world. There will be a demand for new CD players for a very long time. Sadly, Naim won’t supply that demand, but someone will.

I suspect its unlikely, but… never say never…

I think we can be sure there will be units with CD/DVD style drives in them.

Good to know, though I hope I never need to learn how to do it.

Problem sorted got rid of cds3 let someone else sort out problem of replacement mech in the not to distance future it will need it. Already had new mech replaced under warranty from Naim 1202 fitted a year ago no idea how long it will last. Seller is under no obligation to divulge potential problem with player. So I’m moving to other makes looking at Leema antila, cyrus cdi xr, Roksan blak

Sorry if this has been said before. After owning a CDS 2 player that was bought second and was well over 20 years old I sold it back to the dealer and bought a Rega Isis SS. Lifetime warranty for manufacturing defects and two spare mechanisms that are kept for your player at the Rega factory. The mechanisms were designed and made in Britain. Very pleased with the Isis as I didn’t want a streamer.

Wow…! Now THATS commitment - from Rega - and to their customers…!!!

But - the Rega Isis is a £6000 + CD Player…?? Naim CDS3 territory.

Didn’t Naim do something similar with the CD555 - spare mech for every unit ??

There is only one mech per player for 555 they also have a fault regarding plater I think it cracks new mech required. Anyone who has 555 is living on borrowed time if their player has been in once for repair. Hence my reason for getting rid of cds3 (no more mechs) other manufacturers are offering 5 years warranty so no brainer really
