Synology NAS Media Server App

I currently use my Synology NAS, a DS620Slim, as a backup destination for my Innuos Zenith Mk III’s FLAC files, all very good, works without a hitch.

On examining the backup folder on the NAS, I found the Zenith simply copies the flacs to the NAS, in which case I wondered if I could then use the NAS as a server for these files, ie a backup server should, heaven forfend, the Zenith fail. Installing Synology’s Media Server did the trick. Whilst in no way as sophisticated as the Zenith, it works well enough, albeit with somewhat crude content filtering and display in the Naim App.

I am aware of more sophisticated NAS apps, but thought it worthwhile trying the foc option as a standby solution.

Just in case any Innuos/Synology owners might find it useful :innocent:.

PS I’m sure other NAS manufacturers offer similar apps.

You could run the free version of Asset which is better. I actually use Emby (also free) which works well with the metadata from my ripped CDs.

Thanks :+1:

You could also try Minim Server, which works very well for me and can be installed on a Synology NAS.

Have you tried listening to the files on the Synology, using its upnp server and then comparing it to playing the same files on the Innuos? When I had a UnitiServe I tried listening to the files on my then Synology backup, using MinimServer, and the Synology sounded better. So bye bye UnitiServe, and I’ve just used a NAS ever since.

Work in progress as we post :grinning:.

Synology server can also transcode ‘on the fly’ from FLAC to WAV. May or may not be useful but certainly makes a difference with Naim Gen 1 streamers.

Now you can add a Audirvana core player to your Nas
